Andrew Alvarez and Jacob deGrom split mound duties in the series finale, and it was deGrom who owned it. After a triceps scare knocked him out early in his previous turn, the right-hander needed just 6 innings to remind everyone what a healthy deGrom looks like.

The pre-game case leaned on Washington's recent form and Texas' shaky rotation health, and neither one showed up — deGrom threw his best start in a month while Alvarez couldn't match him. Seager's 3rd-inning homer was the difference the whole way, and the bear case here, a dominant deGrom outing, is exactly what beat this pick.

Texas is priced as a clear home favorite, but that's leaning heavily on deGrom's name and not his last time out, when he barely got through 2 innings. Alvarez has been the better, more trustworthy arm all month, and Washington already has the head-to-head swing in this set. The price on the Nationals looks fair value for a team playing better baseball right now.

Washington's lineup is still without James Wood, whose oblique strain has kept him out for weeks, and the rotation remains a patchwork with Josiah Gray and DJ Herz both rehabbing from elbow issues in the minors. Texas isn't whole either — Nathan Eovaldi and Jack Leiter are both out — but a locked-in deGrom was enough to erase whatever the Nationals' win the night before had suggested.

None of that mattered once Corey Seager connected in the 3rd. His solo shot was really all deGrom needed, and Texas added an insurance run in the 8th to close the book on a series that swung from a lopsided Texas win in the opener to a lopsided Washington win in the middle game to a tight, pitching-first finish here.

The bigger story belongs to deGrom. 10 strikeouts moved him past 2,000 for his career, making him the second pitcher in modern history to reach the mark that fast, behind only Chris Sale — a jolt for a Rangers season that's mostly been about fading playoff math. Washington, meanwhile, is playing out a rebuild year, leaning on arms like Alvarez and prospects such as Jackson Kent while bigger pieces work their way back from injury.

Alvarez, for his part, has quietly done enough to hold down a rotation spot the Nationals didn't expect to need this deep into a lost season — he kept Texas' lineup honest for most of the night before the long ball did him in. That's been the pattern for Washington's kids all year: competitive innings, not enough length to finish the job.

Neither team is whole. Texas is scraping by without Eovaldi and Leiter, and Josh Jung still hasn't restarted baseball activities on his calf. Washington's missing Wood and Millas, with Gray and Herz still building back in the minors. It's why both clubs are leaning harder than usual on unproven arms and bats down the stretch.
