Christian Scott, still building back up from Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure that wiped out his entire 2025, got the ball for the finale. He's pitched to a 2.79 ERA with 14 strikeouts across his two starts since being recalled when Kodai Senga went down. Jake Irvin drew the opposite assignment carrying a 5.84 ERA and a last outing against the Cubs that lasted just 3.1 innings and cost him 5 earned runs.

Washington is still without James Wood, and Sunday brought bad news on that front — manager Blake Butera said the oblique strain that sent his best hitter to the IL on August 4 has been healing slower than the team hoped. New York, meanwhile, got a real jolt of good news of its own before this series even started: Juan Soto ran wind sprints without issue and says he intends to play again before the year is out, even if there's no firm return date yet.

None of that mattered much once first pitch hit at 1:40 PM ET. The Nationals scratched out single runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 7th, but the Mets answered with a three-run 4th and tacked on another in the 5th, and that was enough of a cushion to hold up.
