Miami's the better team by record and gets the platform advantage at home, and the price reflects it. But Washington isn't walking in as dead money — Irvin's had efficient outings mixed into the bad ones, and Pérez's recent volatility takes some shine off Miami's edge. Lean Marlins, but don't expect a laugher.

Nationals
  • Shut out Texas 6-0 during a rough stretch
  • Bullpen arms like Beeter and Henry have been bright spots
  • CJ Abrams day-to-day with an ankle sprain
  • James Wood (30 HR) out with an oblique strain
  • Irvin carries a 5.80 ERA into the start
Marlins
  • Won the series opener 3-2
  • Beat Cincinnati before being swept by Philadelphia
  • Pérez has flashed dominant stuff as recently as mid-August
  • Swept by Philadelphia just before this stretch
  • Bullpen down Anthony Bender and William Kempner
  • Pérez's last several turns have been far shakier than his ERA shows

First pitch is 4:10 PM ET, and the mound matchup tilts hard toward Miami on paper. Jake Irvin takes the ball for Washington with a 2-7 record and a 5.80 ERA that's been one of the roughest lines in the league all summer, while Eury Pérez — still just 23 and building back up from Tommy John surgery — carries a 6-9 mark with a much tidier 3.23 ERA into his own turn.

Washington's lineup is playing shorthanded regardless of who's on the mound. CJ Abrams is day-to-day with a sprained ankle and has already sat multiple games in Miami, and James Wood — the 30-homer bat the Nats can least afford to lose — remains out with a strained oblique. Miami's not fully healthy either: Kyle Stowers is still working back from a hamstring strain, and the bullpen just lost Anthony Bender and William Kempner to injury, thinning a relief corps that could matter if this one turns into a slog.

None of that stops Washington from playing spoiler. The Nats have shown flashes even during the freefall — a 6-0 shutout of Texas broke up an otherwise ugly week — and Irvin, for all his struggles, has strung together efficient innings before. Miami just doesn't want to make this easy on a team with nothing left to lose.

Pérez is the more interesting watch of the two starters. Since the calendar flipped to August he's alternated brilliant with shaky, and the season-long ERA doesn't fully capture how volatile his last several turns have looked — a reminder that a young arm this many innings past Tommy John doesn't always scale in a straight line.

Add it up and this is a game where the standings say one thing and the day-to-day availability says another. Miami's the better team on paper and at home, but between an ankle, an oblique, a thinned bullpen and a starter who's been anything but consistent lately, there's more swing in this one than a club above .500 hosting one well under it usually suggests.
