Pérez and Miles Mikolas made for an uneven matchup on paper, and it played out that way on the field. Mikolas (3-8, 5.67 ERA) has been running on fumes for Washington most of the year, while Pérez (7-6, 3.24) carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning before Brady House finally broke it up with a clean single.

The case cashed clean. Pérez didn't just outpitch Mikolas, he nearly no-hit Washington outright, and Acuña and Olson's back-to-back first-inning bombs erased any doubt before the sixth out. The López scratch we flagged as a risk never mattered — his replacement was the best player on the field.

Pregame

Atlanta's the pick here and it's not close. López has been sharp in back-to-back outings and the Braves have won 3 straight over this exact opponent, while Mikolas still hasn't turned in a quality start all year. Washington's price reflects real doubt, and rightly so.

Reynaldo López was scratched just 35 minutes before first pitch with knee inflammation, which meant Pérez got the ball on short notice — and he made the most of it, working 7 innings on only 78 pitches with 6 strikeouts. Atlanta's rotation is already stretched thin with Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach both out on the 60-day IL, so length like that from a fill-in takes real pressure off a taxed bullpen.

Washington's night unraveled fast. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson went back-to-back in the first inning, Dominic Smith added a 403-foot blast in the fourth, and by the time the Nationals finally got a hit off Pérez, the game was already decided. Atlanta's now won 4 straight and hasn't dropped a game to Washington all series.

The finale capped off a full series sweep for the Braves, who've simply owned this matchup the last three days. Washington's bullpen, already down Mitchell Parker and Richard Lovelady for the year, had no answer once Pérez left in the seventh, and the Nationals' four-game skid is starting to look like a real slide rather than a blip.

None of it changes the standings picture much — Atlanta was never in doubt as the better team in this series — but it's another data point in a season where the Braves keep finding secondary contributors to step up while their front-line names rehab. Washington, meanwhile, needs Mikolas to find whatever version of himself showed up in May, because right now the rotation behind him is thin and getting thinner.
