Friday's 7:15 PM ET first pitch put Griffin — the National League's most unlikely All-Star story — on the mound against Bryce Elder, and on paper it looked like the mismatch it usually is. Griffin, a 31-year-old rookie fresh off a return from Japan, came in 12-2 with a 3.06 ERA, the kind of season that's turned him into one of the more talked-about names ahead of the trade deadline. Elder came in scuffling by comparison, sitting at 6-6 with a 3.84 ERA and no decision in his last outing against Baltimore.

Braves won 6-2 outright, cashing the moneyline pick as the deeper lineup did just enough.

Pregame

Atlanta was the right side straight up here — Elder's had his shaky nights but this Braves lineup has enough juice to bail him out, and the -151 price reflected a real gap between a 64-45 club and a Nationals team stuck at .500. Griffin's been the better arm on the mound plenty of nights this year, but Washington's offense around him hasn't been consistent enough to make road moneyline dogs a good bet. Lay the number with Atlanta at home.

Washington's coming into this one banged up in the bullpen, with Mitchell Parker, Brad Lord, PJ Poulin and Richard Lovelady all shelved — a group that's forced the Nats to lean harder on their rotation than they'd like. Atlanta's dealing with its own absences, missing Spencer Schwellenbach, Spencer Strider and Sean Murphy for a while now, but the lineup that took the field still had enough juice to matter. The market liked Atlanta at home, and for good reason.

It played out about as expected early. Atlanta grabbed single runs in each of the first two innings and Washington answered with one of its own in the fourth, and through five it looked like the kind of grind-it-out game these two clubs have been playing all series. Then the sixth inning happened.

Atlanta strung together the big rally it's leaned on all season, sending the middle of the order through the sixth and turning a 2-run edge into a 4-run cushion by the time the inning was over. Washington got a run back in the ninth to make it respectable, but by then the Braves' bullpen had more than enough cushion to shut the door.

The win keeps Atlanta comfortably above .500 while its lineup carries a rotation still missing Strider and Schwellenbach. For Washington, the loss is just another data point in a season that's landed the club dead in the middle — 55-55 with a trade deadline bearing down and names like Luis Garcia Jr. drawing outside interest even while he's in the middle of a career year at the plate.

Griffin's next turn through the rotation will get watched closely no matter what happens between now and the deadline — a 31-year-old rookie having this kind of year doesn't come around often, breakout arm or trade chip depending who you ask. For the Braves, it's on to the next one with the kind of late-inning firepower that's made Truist Park a tough building all year.
