Chicago's chasing a real division crown and just took the last meeting with this Mets club, which is enough to lean on the home side here. Castillo's overall season numbers are ugly, but he's pitching for something that matters while New York is running out the clock on a lost year.

Mets
  • Christian Scott has a 3.51 ERA and 7 K's last time out
  • Took 2 of 3 from Padres in the last 5 games
  • Soto, Polanco, and Vientos all out or hobbled
  • Bullpen down three relievers to injury (Williams, Perez, Garrett)
White Sox
  • 67-61 and leading a surprise AL Central push
  • Won the last meeting with this Mets club, 6-4
  • Both catchers, Teel and Bart, are out injured
  • Castillo's last start: 4.2 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER

Christian Scott (4-3, 3.51 ERA) gets the ball for New York against Luis Castillo (4-9, 4.99 ERA) at 6:10 PM CT, and the gap in those numbers tells its own story about where each of these teams is right now.

New York is already without Juan Soto, and interim manager Andy Green confirmed this week that Jorge Polanco is done for the season after ankle surgery — a rough stretch for a lineup that was fading even before that news. Chicago's issue is behind the plate instead, with both Kyle Teel and Joey Bart out, leaving the White Sox breaking in backup catchers behind a rotation that's trying to hold a division lead.

Whatever the market thinks of either club, this is still a Mets team playing spoiler on the road against a White Sox club that's been the best story in baseball all summer — from one of the worst seasons ever in 2024 to a legitimate shot at October.

These two just played each other Friday, with Chicago grinding out a 6-4 win. Scott was excellent in his last turn out, striking out 7 over 6.1 innings against Washington, while Castillo's last tune-up was a mess — 8 hits and 3 earned runs in only 4.2 innings against the Cubs.

None of that changes the standings math. The White Sox are playing for a division title that looked unthinkable a year ago, and the Mets are auditioning arms and hoping Scott's second half keeps building toward next season.
