Sean Burke (7-6, 3.15 ERA) got the ball for Chicago against Sean Manaea (4-5, 4.11 ERA) in a 6:40 PM CT first pitch at Rate Field, and on paper it looked like the kind of arm-vs-arm matchup that stays low-scoring deep into the night.

This one cashed, but not on the pre-game logic — Burke was rocky again, not the stopper the case leaned on, and Chicago actually trailed 4-0 into the 6th. The bullpen concern flagged for New York is exactly what showed up: the Mets couldn't hold a multi-run lead late, and Chicago's offense, not its ace, delivered the moneyline.

Pregame

Chicago's the better team on paper right now and they're at home, which is where the price sits. New York's actually won more recently, but that surge is happening without Soto in the lineup and with a bullpen missing three key relievers. Take the White Sox to handle business here.

It didn't play out that way. Burke had been the White Sox's best pitcher for most of the summer, but his last time out against Detroit was a rough one — 4.1 innings, 4 earned runs, more walks (3) than strikeouts (2) — and New York picked up right where that outing left off, hanging runs on him early. Manaea, by contrast, had been trending the other direction after a slow start to his year, and it showed in his final line before this one: 6.1 innings, 7 strikeouts, just 2 walks against Washington.

New York came into this series playing its best baseball of the season, while Chicago had been treading water after a stretch atop the AL Central. Both trend lines mattered less than what actually happened on the field Friday.

The Mets jumped out to a 4-0 lead through 5 innings, stacking runs in the 2nd, 4th and 5th while Manaea kept Chicago's lineup quiet. That's the version of this game the pre-game numbers pointed to — a hot New York club riding value pitching into a get-right spot on the road.

Then the 6th inning happened. Chicago erupted for 4 runs to tie it at 4-4, flipping a game that looked decided into a coin flip, and neither bullpen did much to settle things down from there. The Mets are also playing without Devin Williams, Cionel Perez and Reed Garrett — three relievers who'd normally be trusted with exactly this kind of late-inning spot — and it showed when the game got tight.

Chicago finished the job with 2 more in the bottom of the 9th to walk it off, 6-4. It's the kind of result that erases a clean start from Manaea and papers over a shaky one from Burke — a reminder that on the South Side this year, the bullpens and the last at-bat have decided more games than the guys who started them.
