Nolan McLean (6-6, 3.34 ERA) got the ball for New York looking to bounce back from a rough final line in his last outing, when he allowed 0 earned runs over 6.0 innings against Boston but still walked away with a loss. Alan Rangel (0-2, 5.40 ERA) started for Philadelphia coming off a shaky 3.1-inning, 3-earned-run outing against Cincinnati, and the early returns suggested the mismatch was real.

Missed — the Phillies lost outright 6-1, with Rangel's shaky bear case (rotation instability) playing out exactly as feared.

Pregame

We backed the Phillies at plus money on the moneyline, betting that the home team chasing a division race would find a way against a Mets club with nothing to play for. That didn't hold up as New York's lineup jumped Rangel early and never let up. Philadelphia's pitching depth issues, with two relievers freshly on the 15-day IL, made this a tougher outright bet than the standings suggested.

New York jumped on Rangel immediately, and Philadelphia's lineup never found an answer. The Phillies are still without Adolis Garcia (torn lat, surgery) and lost Johan Rojas for the year to elbow surgery, thinning an outfield that already had to replace what Garcia brought. On the pitching side, Philadelphia is now working around 15-day IL stints for both Brad Keller (torn UCL) and Tanner Banks (forearm strain), forcing Rangel back into rotation duty in a game that badly needed length he didn't have.

Both of these franchises fired their managers this season, and the Sunday split screen showed just how differently that's gone. New York dumped Carlos Mendoza and installed Andy Green on an interim basis with the club buried in last place; Philadelphia fired Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start and has ridden Don Mattingly's turnaround back into a legitimate NL East race. One team is auditioning for next year. The other is trying to hold off Atlanta.

The Mets put this one away early. They scored 2 in the first and 3 more in the second, and by the time Philadelphia scratched out its lone run in the seventh, the game was already decided. McLean cruised behind that cushion, and New York piled up 14 hits against a Phillies pitching staff that had no margin for error with Keller and Banks both out.

It's a split series result for two teams headed in opposite directions. The Mets, at 41-58, aren't playing for October, but wins like this matter for Green's audition and for McLean's case as a Rookie of the Year favorite. The Phillies, at 55-44, can shrug this one off if Luis Robert Jr. and the Braves race stay in view, but they'll need Rangel or reinforcements to give them length before the next series.
