Christian Scott took the ball for the Mets at 1:10 PM CT looking to build on a start where he struck out 7 Phillies without issuing a walk. Across from him, Logan Henderson kept doing what he's done all season for Milwaukee — missing bats without needing to pound the strike zone low, a profile that's made the 23-year-old one of the more interesting arms in a stacked Brewers rotation.

Milwaukee won 4-3, cashing the moneyline as the Brewers' depth and Henderson's form carried the day.

Pregame

The Brewers were priced as clear favorites at -150 and cashed it, even after their bats went cold a night earlier. Milwaukee's floor with this rotation and lineup depth is just higher than New York's right now, and Christian Scott's solid recent form wasn't enough to offset a Mets club that's lost 43 games and counting.

Both clubs are patching things together. The Mets are still without Mark Vientos, whose fractured hand ended a rehab window that had nothing to do with performance, and their bullpen is running thin with Reed Garrett, Dedniel Nunez, Austin Warren and Justin Hagenman all on the shelf. Milwaukee's dealt with its own attrition — Brandon Woodruff and Quinn Priester are both done for the year after separate shoulder and thoracic surgeries — but a 63-38 record says the depth behind them hasn't blinked.

This series had already delivered whiplash before Wednesday. The Brewers rolled in Game 1, then the Mets answered by shutting them out to snap Milwaukee's win streak, with Luis Robert Jr. going deep for his first hit back from a back injury. That kind of split — one team dominant on paper, the other still capable of stealing a game — is exactly why the rubber match mattered more than a Wednesday matinee between a first-place club and a last-place one usually would.

Milwaukee's lineup did its damage early, plating 3 in the second before the game settled into the kind of grinding, single-run baseball both bullpens have gotten used to playing this season. New York kept chipping — a run here, a run there — and had one more shot in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to finish the job the way they had a day earlier.

The bigger picture hasn't changed for New York. Andy Green is still steering the interim ship after replacing Carlos Mendoza, and a stretch that included an 11-game losing streak has gutted the Mets' playoff odds. At 43-59 and last in the NL East, moral victories like Tuesday's shutout are nice, but they're not stopping the slide.

For the Brewers, it's the opposite problem to have. They're running away with the NL Central even while absorbing rotation losses that would cripple most contenders, and arms like Henderson are the reason why. Wednesday's win wasn't pretty, but at this point in the season, Milwaukee doesn't need pretty — just another one in the win column.
