Christian Scott (3-3, 3.45 ERA) got the ball for the Mets against Bryce Elder (8-6, 4.03 ERA) in Monday's series opener at Truist Park, first pitch at 7:15 PM ET, and neither guy came in cold. Scott's been trending up all year, and Elder was fresh off arguably his best start of the season.

This one didn't come close. The bull case — Elder rolling and Atlanta's talent gap — evaporated in the first inning when the Mets hung 5 runs on the board. The bear case had it right: Scott and a hot Mets offense were live dogs, and New York cruised to an 8-5 win that never felt in doubt after the second inning.

Pregame

Atlanta's price reflects a team that's simply better top to bottom despite the recent dip, and the Mets' absences at the plate make backing New York's moneyline a tough sell even with their hot week. Sharp money has already piled onto the Braves here, and the gap in season-long quality between a 71-win club and a 52-win club is hard for a short winning streak to erase. Take Atlanta to get it done at home.

Elder's last time out he shredded Miami for 7 shutout-adjacent innings, allowing just 1 earned run on a single hit. None of that carried over here. Meanwhile the Mets are trying to win games without Juan Soto, who's on the 10-day IL with a strained calf, and without a chunk of their bullpen — closer Devin Williams landed on the 15-day IL Monday with a right shoulder strain, adding to a relief corps already down Cionel Perez and Austin Warren.

Atlanta, for its part, is still waiting on Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach to work back from their own arm injuries, so the rotation depth Elder was supposed to anchor has been thinner than the Braves would like all summer.

The Mets didn't wait around. New York plated 5 in the first inning and tacked on 1 more in the second before Atlanta had recorded more than a handful of outs, and that was effectively the ballgame. The Braves clawed back with 2 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth to make it interesting, but New York's bullpen — shorthanded as it is — closed the door, and an insurance run in the ninth put it away, 8-5.

This is exactly the kind of win the Mets needed given the season they're having. At 52-67 they're not sniffing a playoff race, but they've won 4 of their last 5, including a 3-game gauntlet through Pittsburgh that ended with an 11-1 blowout. The Braves, meanwhile, sit at 71-47 and are still very much alive atop the division, but a game like this — dropping a series opener at home to a losing club — is the kind of stumble they can't afford to make a habit of.

Elder will get another look at this Mets lineup before the series is out, and Atlanta will want a cleaner version of him next time. For now, New York heads to the finale with the mound presence advantage and a lineup that's clearly seeing the ball well, injuries and all.
