Tyler Phillips (2-5, 3.53 ERA) got the ball for Miami looking to build on a five-inning, two-run outing against the Phillies his last time out, while Zac Thornton (2-1, 2.88 ERA) took the mound for a Mets team that scratched Freddy Peralta earlier in the week with trade interest heating up around him.

The Marlins moneyline cashed comfortably, winning 6-2 wire-to-wire. The pre-game case about roster urgency held up — Miami's lineup did the damage across the board while a shorthanded Mets club couldn't answer.

Pregame

Miami is a game above .500 and fighting for a playoff spot, while the Mets have nothing left to play for down the stretch. Getting plus money on a team that's been the better ballclub of late is where the value sits, especially against a Mets roster that's actively being stripped for parts at the deadline.

New York is playing out the string as sellers, and it showed in the little things Saturday — two errors behind Thornton didn't help a Mets club already dealing with Juan Soto on the injured list with a calf strain and Mark Vientos out with a fractured hand. Miami, meanwhile, is scrapping for a wild card spot and has treated this Citi Field trip like a measuring stick, taking the last two meetings after dropping the series opener.

The Marlins jumped out early and kept adding, scoring in five of the first six innings while the Mets' offense went cold after a second-inning flurry. New York had chances — 7 hits on the day — but couldn't string enough together against a Miami pitching staff that made the two Mets errors count.

Kyle Stowers has been the story of Miami's offense of late, and Miami's lineup depth carried the day again as the Marlins piled up 10 hits without needing one huge swing to do it. For a Mets team 16 games back and stuck selling off pieces like Peralta, days like this are exactly why the front office is looking toward next year instead of this week's standings.

Miami improved to 56-55 and heads out of New York having taken the series, a small but real step in a wild card race where they sit a couple games back of the field. The Mets, now 47-64, close the book on this homestand with more questions than answers up and down the roster.
