Sandy Alcantara (10-5, 3.89 ERA) got the ball for Miami looking to build on a strong final start before the break, while Logan Henderson (3-1, 2.97 ERA) took the mound for Milwaukee still filling the void left by Brandon Woodruff, whose shoulder outlook manager Pat Murphy admitted this week 'isn't good.' First pitch was set for 6:40 PM CT at American Family Field.

The Brewers moneyline cashed as Henderson and the bullpen held Miami to 1 run in a 2-1 walk-off win.

Pregame

Milwaukee's the deeper, better-positioned team even in a mini-slump, and at home with Henderson on the bump they were the right side to lay the price on. It wasn't a laugher, but a win's a win, and the Brewers found a way in the 9th.

The Brewers came in banged up beyond just Woodruff — Kyle Harrison is rehabbing an elbow, DL Hall is working back from a pectoral strain, and Jacob Misiorowski is day-to-day, meaning Henderson's steady presence in the rotation has been more necessity than luxury. Miami, meanwhile, is dealing with a bullpen that's been gutted by injuries to Ronny Henriquez, Anthony Bender, John King and William Kempner, forcing Clayton McCullough to lean hard on whoever's healthy.

Both offenses looked spent walking into this one. Milwaukee had dropped 4 of its last 5, including a brutal sweep in Pittsburgh capped by a 14-5 blowout loss, while the Marlins had lost 3 straight to Cleveland right before this series. Neither team was hitting on all cylinders, and this game played out exactly like that kind of matchup — a slog decided by inches, not fireworks.

Alcantara and Henderson both did their jobs and then some. Miami scratched across a single run in the 5th to threaten a road win, but Milwaukee answered right back in the bottom of the frame to even it. From there it was a stalemate — zeroes on the board, relievers trading zeros, nobody blinking — until the Brewers finally broke through in the bottom of the 9th to walk it off, 2-1.

It wasn't pretty, but for a Brewers club that had been getting run out of the building in Pittsburgh, a low-scoring grind-it-out win against a playoff-hopeful Marlins team is exactly the kind of game that steadies a clubhouse. Milwaukee still sits comfortably ahead in the standings at 59-37; Miami, at 52-45, stays squarely in the thick of the NL Wild Card chase and will need Alcantara's bullpen concerns sorted out before the deadline.

Both sides head into the next game with plenty to sort out — Milwaukee waiting on Harrison and Hall to work back into the rotation mix, Miami hoping its shorthanded bullpen holds up in a race that's far from decided.
