The Marlins were the play here at plus money, and the price made sense given Miami had already dropped 19 runs on this Athletics staff over the first two games of the series. Pérez was coming off his best start of the year, while Sacramento was trotting out a rookie in Jump behind a lineup missing Rooker, Soderstrom and Wilson. The board had the A's as a slight home favorite, but the roster damage said otherwise.

The Athletics have been picking through a lineup with real holes lately. Brent Rooker is done for the year after season-ending left knee surgery, Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson are both on the 10-day IL, and catcher Shea Langeliers was out of Sunday's lineup with a thumb issue. That's a lot of thump missing from a team that's now dropped 4 of its last 5. Jump, the rookie southpaw who's emerged as one of Oakland's more encouraging arms since his May call-up, was miscast as a stopper in this spot given how thin the roster around him has gotten.

None of that stopped the Athletics from making it interesting. Down 9-0 entering the eighth inning, Sacramento scored 5 in the eighth and 3 more in the ninth — 8 runs in the final two frames — before finally running out of outs. It was the kind of finish that turns a laugher into a genuine sweat.

Miami didn't get out clean, either. Center fielder Jakob Marsee was removed from Sunday's game with a right knee contusion, an injury worth watching given how thin the Marlins' pitching depth already is behind him — Anthony Bender, Janson Junk, Josh Ekness, Andrew Nardi, Robby Snelling and Adam Mazur are all sidelined in some form. Depth issues on both sides made this one look shakier late than it should have.

A 9-0 laugher that turns into a 1-run final is a reminder these Athletics aren't dead just because the record says so — they've got fight, even shorthanded. But for Miami, a sweep is a sweep, and every version of a win counts the same in the standings.
