Emerson Hancock (6-4, 3.17) got the ball for Seattle looking to snap the skid, going up against Ian Seymour (6-1, 4.45), who was fresh off a 12-strikeout gem against the Yankees on July 7.

Loss — the bull case on Seymour's form never showed up, and the Mariners' offense (the bear risk) erupted for 8 runs.

Pregame

We took the Rays at -125 on the moneyline, banking on Seymour's strikeout stuff and a Tampa lineup that had been rolling to handle a Mariners team playing without Julio Rodriguez. Instead Seattle's bats woke up at the worst possible time for the home side, and Hancock's early exit barely slowed them down.

Hancock never got the chance to build on that pitching matchup the way anyone drew it up. He left the game with what was described as a hand injury, and the Mariners had to piece together the rest of the afternoon with their bullpen against a Rays lineup that had won 4 of its last 5. Julio Rodriguez remained out with a concussion, leaving an already thin Seattle lineup without its best player for a third straight game of this series.

None of it mattered. J.P. Crawford went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a pair of doubles, and Seattle got out of the gate with a three-run second before blowing it open with four more in the fourth. Randy Arozarena, of all people, added to the damage against his old organization, and Weston Wilson chipped in a solo shot off Seymour. Whatever was broken about this Mariners offense for five straight losses, it found itself in a hurry.

Tampa Bay's only answer came in the eighth, when Christian Bethancourt and Yandy Diaz produced a couple runs too late to matter, with the Rays committing two errors along the way in a game that never really felt competitive after the fourth inning. For a team that came in at 56-37 and firmly in the thick of the AL East race, it was a sloppy afternoon to lose to a last-place club.

The bigger story for Seattle going forward isn't the final score, it's Hancock. He's been arguably their most reliable starter all year, and losing him for any stretch — on top of Julio Rodriguez still sidelined and Brendan Donovan working back from a groin injury — would hit a rotation and lineup that's already been stretched thin. Still, for one Sunday, the Mariners looked like the team a lot of people expected in spring training, not the one that had dropped five in a row.
