Logan Gilbert got the ball for Seattle looking to stop the bleeding after the Mariners dropped the first two games of this series, and he drew a matchup with a Rangers ace who's still finding his footing. Jacob deGrom took the mound off a rough return from a glute strain that limited him to 4.2 innings and 5 earned runs in his last outing against the White Sox.

The pick hit — Seattle's bats broke out late and Gilbert's side won 6-4 outright, exactly the bull case coming through.

Pregame

We took the Mariners at -100 to win outright, banking on Gilbert's swing-and-miss stuff outdueling a deGrom still shaking off a glute strain. Seattle's offense had been ice cold for weeks, which made this a real leap of faith on a team that had dropped 4 straight.

Texas came in banged up at the position that matters most for stability: Corey Seager and Josh Jung were both out, and the Rangers were already without Jack Leiter and Jordan Montgomery in the rotation. Seattle wasn't exactly whole either, with Brendan Donovan and Rob Refsnyder both on rehab assignments in Tacoma instead of the lineup.

None of that stopped Texas from jumping out early again, same as it had all series. But this time Seattle didn't fold.

The Rangers led 3-1 through six behind a bullpen day that started strong, but the Mariners blew the game open with back-to-back home runs in the 7th inning, part of a four-run frame that flipped the score for good. Seattle piled up 14 hits on the day against a Rangers pitching staff that had shut them down in each of the prior two games.

It's the kind of outburst Seattle badly needed. The Mariners had been held to a .208 average and a .610 OPS as a team over their worst stretch of the season, with Cal Raleigh scuffling badly in July. One big inning against a Texas bullpen doesn't erase a monthlong slump, but it at least stopped a 4-game losing streak before it became 5, and it came against a division leader that had won 2 of the first 3 in this set by a combined 16-5.
