Bryce Miller (4-4, 2.27 ERA) gets the ball for Seattle in the series opener at 7:05 PM CT, matched up against MacKenzie Gore (6-8, 4.80), who's still searching for the form Texas thought it landed when it traded for him from Washington last January.

Miller's 2.27 ERA against Gore's 4.80 is the kind of pitching gap that can decide a game outright, and Seattle's coming off a series win over Cincinnati. Texas gets the ballpark, but its lineup is missing Seager and playing cautious with Jung, which evens out home field. Take the Mariners to win it straight up.

Neither club is at full strength. J.P. Crawford's sore wrist has kept Seattle's shortstop out of the lineup, and Corey Seager remains sidelined for Texas as he works back from a third IL stint this season, with Josh Jung's calf tightness adding another layer of caution for a Rangers lineup already missing its best player. The board barely blinks — Seattle's priced as a live moneyline underdog on the road.

That tightness reflects the standings. Texas sits half a game up in the AL West, Seattle half a game back, and neither team has separated from the pack with the trade deadline bearing down on Aug. 3.

Seattle's front office has stayed quiet on big swings, banking instead on Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor rounding into form rather than remaking the roster before the deadline. Texas faces its own math: if Seager doesn't return before Aug. 3, buy-or-sell decisions get a lot messier for a team that just split a four-game set with the White Sox that included a 10-run outburst and a 10-run defeat within 48 hours.

Miller's comeback from an oblique strain has been the more encouraging arc of the two starters — his slider usage has nearly doubled since returning and hitters have had a much tougher time squaring it up. Gore, a Boras client and extension candidate, has the raw stuff to flip the script in front of his home crowd, but the results haven't been there enough this year to make him the safer bet in a series with real standings weight.
