First pitch went at 6:40 PM ET with Bryce Miller and his 2.18 ERA on the mound for a Mariners club that desperately needed a stopper, going up against Janson Junk, who hadn't started a game since May 25. That gap alone made this a lopsided pitching matchup on paper, and it played out that way.

Cashed clean — Miami's bullpen strength carried the day exactly as the bull case argued, winning 8-4.

Pregame

We backed the Marlins on the moneyline at +117 before first pitch, and Miami's bullpen depth was the difference-maker again. The market had been shading toward Seattle late, with the Mariners' price shortening from -144 to -123, but that move undersold just how well Miami's staff has pitched during this stretch. Getting plus-money on a team playing this complete was the right side.

Seattle came in still holding the AL West lead at 47-46, but the last week has been a gut check. Julio Rodriguez is out on the concussion IL after getting hit by a relay throw, and Brendan Donovan, Rob Refsnyder and Will Wilson are all working their way back from injury too. That's a lot of lineup to replace on the fly, and it showed against a Marlins staff that's quietly been one of the best in baseball since June.

Miami's turned into the hottest team in the league, and this series was just the latest example. The Marlins are within a game of the Cubs and Phillies in the NL Wild Card chase, and pitchers like closer Pete Fairbanks have been lights-out down the stretch of games. Losing Owen Caissie and John King to the IL on the same day barely slowed them down.

The Marlins' offense did the rest. Kyle Stowers has been a problem all series, Otto Lopez keeps racking up multi-hit games, and this lineup has been finding ways to put crooked numbers on the board against a Mariners pitching staff that just couldn't slow it down. Seattle got some offense of its own late, but it was too little against a team playing this well.

Seattle leaves Miami having dropped all 3 games of this set, a rough finish to a stretch that started with a series win over Toronto. The Mariners still have the division cushion, but the absences are piling up and this sweep is the kind of thing that lingers. Miami, meanwhile, just keeps rolling and doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime soon.
