Seattle's lineup is banged up in ways that matter. Julio Rodriguez is still on the concussion IL, Brendan Donovan is working his way back from a groin issue, and both Rob Refsnyder and Cooper Criswell are shelved. That's a lot of thin margin for a lineup that got shut out on 5 hits Wednesday — no Mariners hitter did much of anything against Phillips and Miami's bullpen.
Phillips wasn't sharp in his last outing against Oakland, getting knocked around for 5 earned in just 3.1 innings, so holding a good Mariners lineup scoreless was as much a bullpen and defense story as it was his. Miami's pitching staff, patchwork as it's been with Junk, Bender, Ekness, Nardi and others out, found a way to get through 9 without giving anything back.
