George Kirby (8-10, 4.18 ERA) got the ball for Seattle in the getaway-day matinee at American Family Field, working opposite Robert Gasser (3-5, 4.79) with first pitch set for 1:10 PM CT to close out the three-game set.

Brewers won 7-4, exactly the outcome the price and the record pointed to. Milwaukee's offense did the heavy lifting with a 6-run first, and the pitching staff — shaky as it looked on paper — held up enough to close it out. The sharp money on Milwaukee cashed.

Pregame

Milwaukee's the better team by a wide margin at 78-49 with a comfortable division cushion, and one shaky getaway-day script doesn't change that these rosters aren't equals. Seattle's competitive fire kept Wednesday's game close, but with Gasser fresh off 7 strikeouts and Kirby working around a rough last outing, the home side is the more reliable side to build a bet around.

Gasser's been on a managed workload all year as he builds back up from Tommy John surgery, and that matters against a Mariners club that's still without Bryan Woo and down five relievers — Matt Brash, Cooper Criswell, Carlos Vargas, Cole Wilcox and Will Wilson all somewhere on the injured list. Seattle also just started J.P. Crawford on a rehab assignment, so the roster in this series isn't the one that'll be intact much longer. The market had Milwaukee as the clear favorite going in, and sharp money leaned the same way.

It didn't take long for that favorite tag to look earned. Milwaukee put up 6 runs in the first inning and cruised from there, with Seattle chipping away for 2 in the second and 2 more in the fourth before the Brewers tacked on an insurance run late to make it 7-4.

That's the Cliffs Notes version of where these two clubs are right now. Milwaukee (79-49) owns the best record in baseball and just took 2 of the first 3 in a series that included a 22-0 win that matched the largest shutout of the modern era. Seattle (60-68) is playing out the string well outside the race, and Thursday's loss dropped them to 1-2 in the set after Wednesday's feel-good 7-5 win kept things from getting embarrassing twice.

Neither bullpen is exactly fresh. Milwaukee's missing JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Joel Kuhnel, on top of a rotation that's already lost Brandon Woodruff and Quinn Priester for the year. Seattle's pitching depth chart reads like a hospital ward at this point, which is as much a reason Kirby's workload matters as anything he did against Houston last time out, when he lasted just 4.2 innings in a rocky outing.
