Logan Gilbert took the mound for Seattle looking to put Tuesday's blowout behind him, and he brought swing-and-miss stuff with him — his last time out he struck out 7 Yankees over 6 scoreless innings. Dustin May looked even better on paper, coming off 7 innings of 1-run ball against San Diego in his most recent turn, part of a run that had made him one of the steadier arms in Milwaukee's rotation.

This one never went the locked way. Seattle jumped Dustin May for 4 runs in the first inning and never let go, backing Logan Gilbert to a 7-5 road win despite Joey Ortiz's homer. The bull case on Milwaukee's lineup depth showed up in flashes late, but the bear case won out — May's rough start put the Brewers in a hole they couldn't climb all the way out of.

Pregame

Milwaukee owns the best record in baseball and just dismantled this same Seattle lineup, so the price here reflects a real gap in overall roster quality. Gilbert gives the Mariners a puncher's chance since he's dealing right now, but Seattle's compromised infield and shallow bench make backing the road side a tougher sell.

Milwaukee was already banged up on the position-player side, with Garrett Mitchell (foot) out of the lineup and Sal Frelick (shoulder) still working back on a rehab assignment, and the bullpen wasn't much deeper with Romero, Uribe and Kuhnel all mid-recovery. Seattle's issues ran even heavier through the pitching staff, with Woo, Brash, Criswell, Vargas and Evans all shelved in some form. None of that stopped sharp money from piling onto Milwaukee before first pitch, with the bulk of the tracked bets and dollars landing on the Brewers.

None of it mattered once the game actually started. Seattle strung together an infield single, a bloop double from Dominic Canzone and, after a pair of two-strike walks, a 2-run single off the bat of Taylor Ward to take an early lead, then added 3 more the very next inning to put Milwaukee in a deep hole before the Brewers' lineup had settled in.

Joey Ortiz got 2 back with a homer off Gilbert, but Milwaukee couldn't chip away fast enough against Seattle's early lead, and the Mariners' bullpen made sure the cushion held up the rest of the way.

For Seattle, evening the score against Milwaukee was less about the standings — the Mariners are still fighting an uphill battle at 59-67 — and more about not spending the rest of the trip haunted by a 22-run shutout. For the Brewers, dropping this one snapped a stretch that had them playing as well as anyone in baseball, a reminder that even a 78-48 club can get out-punched on a given night at American Family Field.

Gilbert didn't have his sharpest command all night, but Seattle's offense made sure it didn't matter. May's outing, by contrast, was rough almost from his first batters faced, a tough step back after how well he'd pitched against San Diego.
