Bryan Woo got the ball for Seattle looking to build on a scoreless outing against the Yankees his last time out, and he ran into a Houston lineup that's had trouble finishing off Hunter Brown starts even when Brown himself has been shaky. Brown entered having battled control problems most of the summer, his walk rate nearly doubling from a year ago even as the stuff stayed loud.

Seattle also had to piece together a lineup missing both corner outfielders — Victor Robles out with a sore right shoulder and Taylor Ward sidelined by a quad issue, both scratched for the series finale. Houston, meanwhile, was still working around Carlos Correa's ankle rehab and a couple of rotation pieces on the mend, though the M's front office chose not to move Randy Arozarena at the deadline, a signal they still liked their spot in a crowded AL West race.

None of that ended up mattering much once the lineups were set. Randy Arozarena got Seattle on the board early, and from there it turned into the kind of low-scoring grind these two clubs have been trading all series.

Arozarena's first-inning homer staked Woo to an early cushion, and Cal Raleigh — who's had about as tough a season at the plate as a reigning slugger can have — added a solo shot in the sixth to push the lead to 3-1. Woo did the rest, working 6 innings on 3 hits and 2 runs with 5 strikeouts, and Andrés Muñoz slammed the door for the save after Nick Allen's sixth-inning homer briefly made it a one-run game.

Brown took the loss after 5 innings and 3 runs allowed, another outing that fits the pattern of a talented arm still hunting for the consistency that had him in Cy Young contention a year ago. It's not that the raw stuff disappeared — he's flashed swing-and-miss stretches all season — it's that the free passes keep creeping the pitch counts up and shortening his starts.

The win closes the book on a set Seattle split the first two games of before taking the rubber match, and it's the kind of result that won't move either club's season much in the standings but says plenty about where each roster stands in mid-August. Woo looks like a guy trending in the right direction; Houston still needs its ace to find the strike zone more consistently if it wants to hold serve in a division that's refusing to separate.
