Cantillo brought a 9-7 record and a 3.73 ERA into this one off one of his better outings of the year — 6 innings, 1 run, 7 strikeouts against San Diego — while Gordon started for Colorado still winless at 0-3 with a 5.75 ERA, making his first start since before the All-Star break.

Cleveland won outright and it was never in doubt, exactly what the pre-game case argued — the healthier roster and the hotter arm showed up from the first pitch. The only surprise was the margin; nobody predicted a 9-1 laugher.

Pregame

Cleveland's price here reflects a team that's healthier on the mound and playing with something on the line, going up against a Rockies club that's lost 3 in a row. Gordon's return to a big-league mound after a long layoff only adds more uncertainty to Colorado's side. This is a spot to trust the better roster and the better recent arm.

That layoff mattered. Gordon came back to a Rockies staff already stretched thin, with Jose Quintana and Chase Dollander both lost for months on the 60-day IL and a handful of relievers out for the year. Cleveland wasn't at full strength either — Rhys Hoskins landed on the 10-day IL after a productive final week at the plate — but the roster math still tilted hard toward the Guardians.

None of that mattered much once the game actually started. Cleveland answered early and never let Colorado settle in, stacking 14 hits across the lineup and burying the game with a 3-run 7th that ended any thought of a Coors comeback.

Cleveland came in scuffling for stretches — a couple of shutout losses mixed into the last 5 — but still sits over .500 in recent play, and this one looked nothing like a team fighting form. Colorado's been the opposite story all month: a 5-game home losing streak, the second-longest at Coors Field this season, and Friday did nothing to snap it.

The injury list tells you why this wasn't close. Colorado's without its rotation depth and its primary catcher in Hunter Goodman, and Kyle Freeland's day-to-day status only adds to the uncertainty up and down the staff. Cleveland's issues are lighter by comparison — Hoskins' absence stings, but Cantillo pitching like this covers a lot.

Two more games left in this series at Coors, and Colorado will need a lot more than one bounce-back start to turn the week around.
