Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-3 to win the ALCS in 6 games and set up a World Series against the Brewers. Freddy Peralta held the Guardians to 1 run over 5.1 innings after the Rays scored 3 early, and 2-run homers from Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz pulled it away late. Cleveland's offense, held to 3 runs or fewer in all 5 of its last games, never got closer than 2 runs.

Cleveland Guardians
  • Armstrong retired the side on 7 pitches as opener
  • Worked Peralta for 3 walks and 84 pitches
  • Scored 2 in the 8th rather than going quietly
  • Fell behind 3-0 by the 3rd inning
  • Just 1 run off Peralta in 5.1 innings
  • Pen gave up 2-run homers to Caminero and Díaz
Tampa Bay Rays
  • Peralta: 5.1 innings, 1 earned run, the clinching win
  • Caminero and Díaz each hit 2-run homers
  • Scored 4 in the 7th and 8th to put it away
  • Peralta walked 3 and struck out only 3
  • Let Cleveland back in with 2 runs in the 8th

Cleveland handed the ball to Shawn Armstrong as an opener, and he did his job. He retired the side in the 1st on 7 pitches. Tampa Bay went with Freddy Peralta, who came in at 10-11 with a 4.42 ERA on the season. His last regular-season start was 5.1 scoreless innings in Philadelphia, and that was his workload again here.

The Guardians were already playing short. Rhys Hoskins was still on the IL with his back, and the bullpen had lost Andrew Walters to elbow surgery and Colin Holderman to wrist surgery. The Rays had a hole of their own, with Shane McClanahan ruled out for the rest of the postseason, and they kept winning this series without him.

Armstrong's clean 1st was as good as it got for Cleveland. The Rays scored 2 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd, and a lineup that needed a big night got a 3-0 hole to dig out of before the 4th inning.

Peralta was not overpowering. He walked 3, struck out 3 and gave up 5 hits in 84 pitches. What he did was keep Cleveland from stringing anything together. The Guardians broke through for 1 in the 6th, the inning he left in, and the Tampa Bay bullpen got out of it without more damage. Peralta finished with 1 earned run in 5.1 innings and the win, his second of the postseason.

Then the Rays put it away with the long ball. Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz each hit a 2-run homer, and Tampa Bay scored 2 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th to stretch 3-1 into 7-1. Cleveland got 2 back in the 8th, too late to matter. Both teams had 7 hits and neither made an error. The difference was where the hits landed: 2 of Tampa Bay's cleared the fence with a man on, and Cleveland's mostly came 1 at a time.

For Cleveland, the scores from the last 5 games tell the story: 1, 3, 3, 1, 3. The Guardians went 85-77, beat the Rays 3-2 to steal one game in the stretch, and then scored 7 runs total over their final 3 losses. Tampa Bay won 98 games in the regular season, and over these 6 games the Rays looked like the better team the whole way through. They took the series 4-2 and will play Milwaukee next.
