First pitch at Tropicana Field goes at 7:10 PM ET, and it's Joey Cantillo against Shane McClanahan in a matchup of two guys who just got roughed up in their last starts. Cantillo lasted only 5 innings against Pittsburgh, giving up 4 earned on 7 hits, while McClanahan got tagged for 5 earned in 5 innings against Boston. Neither arm is walking in hot, which sets up as an early litmus test for both staffs.

Cleveland's the underdog here and it shows in the price, but this is a team fighting for a wild-card spot against a Rays club that just got outscored and lost its series finale in Toronto. McClanahan's last start wasn't good, and if that carries over, the plus-money on the Guardians looks like real value rather than a longshot.

Cleveland's lineup has been the bigger problem lately, having dropped 3 of its last 5 to Minnesota, including a 10-6 blowout loss and a 3-1 stinker to close the series. The Guardians also lost Angel Martinez to the 10-day IL with a foot issue, though he's been productive on a rehab stint at Double-A. Tampa Bay isn't exactly healthy either — Taylor Walls is day-to-day with a finger issue and sat out Thursday, and the Rays are already missing Jake Fraley, Gavin Lux and a pile of bullpen arms including Ryan Pepiot, who's done for the season.

Despite the injury list, Tampa Bay took 3 of 4 from Toronto this week before dropping the finale 3-1, and that stretch is exactly why the Rays sit at 59-43 and own the better record in this series by a wide margin. Cleveland counters with a 13-4 and 5-2 pair of wins sandwiched in there too, so both clubs have shown they can score in bursts — the question is whether either pitching staff can hold up long enough to let that offense matter.

The Guardians are fighting for their playoff lives in a crowded AL Central picture, and every game against a good team carries weight beyond the standings line. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has the luxury of banking series wins and building distance in the East, but that comfort can invite the kind of flat effort that lets a desperate opponent sneak away with a game.
