Boston is the heavy favorite here, and the roster gap backs it up — a Wild Card club against a team that's lost 30-plus more games than it's won this season. San Francisco has shown flashes, including a shutout win over Cleveland recently, but that kind of outing is the exception on a roster this beat up. Lay the price and take the better team.

Giants
  • Shut out Cleveland behind strong pitching earlier this month
  • Devers brings real thump to the middle of the order
  • 52-76 record, one of the majors' worst
  • Bullpen down 7 arms to injury this season
  • Tidwell got rocked in his last start
Red Sox
  • 69-59, sitting in an AL Wild Card spot
  • Won last game, 3-2 over the last 5
  • Offense has produced multiple double-digit scoring nights recently
  • Sandoval allowed 7 earned runs in his last start
  • Bullpen missing Whitlock, Slaten and Kelly
  • Dropped a recent game to Pittsburgh despite the hot stretch

First pitch is 7:15 PM ET, and it's Blade Tidwell (0-0, 4.33 ERA) for San Francisco against Patrick Sandoval (1-2, 4.76 ERA) for Boston, two arms trying to put a rough turn behind them.

Neither guy is walking in with momentum. Tidwell got roughed up for 6 earned runs in just 4.1 innings against Colorado his last time out, and Sandoval was worse, getting tagged for 7 earned in 4 innings against Pittsburgh. Both bullpens are also running thin, which matters more than usual with two shaky starters lined up.

Boston's pen is missing Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten and Zack Kelly. San Francisco's situation is uglier — Matt Gage, Joel Peguero, Keaton Winn, Rowan Wick, Hayden Birdsong, Randy Rodriguez and Jose Butto are all out, which is most of a bullpen's worth of arms gone at once.

All of that sits underneath the real story of the weekend: Devers facing the organization that traded him away last year. He drew a mixed reception in his first game back at Fenway, boos mixing with applause, and he's made clear he's not interested in relitigating how it ended in Boston.

San Francisco is a last-place club playing out the string at 52-76, and the form card shows exactly why — this is a team that's lost 2 straight and dropped 4 of its last 5. Boston, meanwhile, is 69-59 and holding down an AL Wild Card spot under interim manager Chad Tracy, who's steadied the ship since taking over for Alex Cora earlier this year.

Add in showers in the Fenway forecast and a Giants lineup that's been feast-or-famine — shut out twice in the last week, then breaking out for 7 — and this has the shape of a game that could go either quiet or chaotic depending on which bullpen breaks first.
