Wednesday's start belonged to Cody Bradford (0-0, 0.00), who took the mound for Texas for the first time since 2024 after recovering from elbow surgery. Across the way, Carson Whisenhunt (2-2, 7.25) got the ball for a Giants club that's already thinking past this season, coming off a rough turn last time out against San Diego. It was about as clean a get-well outing as the Rangers could've scripted.

Bradford wrecked that thesis right away — Texas hung a 4-run third and coasted from there, while Whisenhunt's ugly ERA turned out to be exactly the red flag it looked like. San Francisco never got a run across on 8 hits, and the plus-money value evaporated in a 6-0 shutout.

Pregame

Getting plus money on the Giants here isn't as crazy as the records suggest. Texas is turning to a starter making his first appearance of the season off elbow surgery, while San Francisco just took the series opener from this same Rangers club. The price reflects a bad Giants team, but it may not fully reflect how shaky Texas looks on the mound today.

Texas needed it. The Rangers are piecing together a rotation with MacKenzie Gore on paternity leave and Jack Leiter still working back from an ankle injury, so a scoreless turn from a reclamation arm like Bradford is exactly the kind of night that keeps a fringe push alive. San Francisco is bleeding bodies by comparison — Matt Chapman, Harrison Bader and Casey Schmitt are all out for extended stretches, and a lineup missing that much thump had no business hanging six zeros on the board against a guy who hadn't started a big-league game in nearly two years.

None of it changed the buying power of this Giants team. San Francisco is 48-66 and dropping series left and right, and Wednesday's shutout is just the latest reminder that this roster is playing out the string a long way from contention. Texas isn't exactly steamrolling anyone either at 56-58, but at least the Rangers can point to Bradford's return as a genuine building block.

The line score tells the story: Texas broke it open with a 4-run third and tacked on single runs in the fifth and eighth, and Bradford and the bullpen made it stand up from there. San Francisco actually put together 8 hits of its own, which says everything about the disconnect — Texas kept finding outs with runners on, and the Giants never got the swing to turn that traffic into runs.

For Texas, it's a series win to close out a stretch that had gone sideways — 4 losses in 5 games before this finale. For the Giants, it's more of the same: a club that's lost 4 of its last 5 walking out of Arlington with even more urgency to figure out who's actually part of next year's roster.

Neither team is playing for much in August, but nights like this are why front offices keep watching anyway — proof of health for one guy, more proof of a lost season for the other.
