Cal Quantrill (4-3, 3.62) got the ball off one of his sharpest turns of the year, a 5.1-inning, 1-run outing against Tampa Bay that included 7 strikeouts, while Logan Webb (6-7, 3.74) brought a similarly clean line from his last trip out against Milwaukee into the 7:05 PM CT opener at Globe Life Field.

This one didn't come close. Quantrill's strikeout stuff never showed up in the box score that mattered, and the bear case — a team in freefall — is exactly what beat us: Texas got buried by its own glove before the bats ever got going. The sharp money on San Francisco called it.

Pregame

Texas is only lightly favored at home despite a better overall record, and there's been real money on the Giants to pull the upset. We're still backing the Rangers — Quantrill has been the more reliable arm of late, and a home crowd against a last-place team should matter after a rough road trip.

Both rotations are picking up slack for banged-up staffs around them. Texas is still without Jack Leiter, Jakob Junis and Jordan Montgomery, and the lineup is missing Josh Jung and both of its primary catchers in Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka. San Francisco has its own mess behind the plate with Jesus Rodriguez out, Matt Chapman still getting his abdomen checked, and Harrison Bader done for the season.

None of that stopped the market from treating this like a near coin flip going in, with the price on Texas tightening as the day went on even as sharp money stacked up on the Giants. San Francisco is knee-deep in a deadline sell-off that's already put names like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray on the block, while the Rangers had been trying to add pieces on the cheap to hang around the Wild Card race.

The line score tells the story better than any recap could: Texas managed just a single run across 9 innings and made 5 errors in the process, turning a manageable Webb outing into a laugher. The Giants scratched across single runs across four different innings, and by the time Texas got its lone run in the bottom of the 9th, the game was long decided.

That kind of sloppy night is exactly what's sinking a Rangers team that came into Tuesday on a 5-game skid — and it's now 6. Texas signaled at the deadline it wanted to keep pushing for a playoff spot, but nights like this are why the Wild Card picture keeps sliding away from them.

For the Giants, it's a rare bright spot in a season that's about tearing things down and evaluating what's left. Webb did his job, the bats did enough, and San Francisco heads out of Texas with a road win while the Rangers search for answers.
