Roupp (7-9, 4.34) draws Hart (0-2, 4.53) for the getaway-day matinee, with first pitch at 1:10 PM PT. Roupp's been in a genuine tailspin, having lost 5 of his last 6 starts, and his last outing against Milwaukee was a mess: 3.2 innings, 4 earned runs, 3 walks. Hart's coming off the opposite problem — he was sharp against Colorado in his last turn but only got to 2.2 innings on 37 pitches before his hook, which says more about San Diego's short-leash approach with him than his stuff.

The pick cashed, but it wasn't clean — San Diego needed a 4-run second inning just to survive a Giants offense that scratched back within 1 in the 8th. The Roupp control-issue thesis showed up exactly as expected early, but Hart's shaky, short-leash profile from the bear case nearly let San Francisco crawl all the way back. Final margin of 1 run means the ml call was right for the reason we gave, even if the ending was closer than it should've been.

Pregame

San Diego's won 2 straight in this series and King's been the more consistent arm all year. Trade deadline motivation aside, the Padres are simply the deeper, healthier club right now, and San Francisco's lineup is missing too many regulars to trust on the road-underdog side.

Both clubs are patching things together. San Francisco is already without Harrison Bader for the rest of the season and just placed catcher Jesus Rodriguez on the IL with elbow neuritis, while Matt Chapman's abdominal strain has him headed for another MRI. San Diego's rotation picture is arguably worse — Joe Musgrove, Lucas Giolito and Nick Pivetta are all still on the shelf, which is exactly why a fringe arm like Hart is starting a game with postseason stakes attached.

None of that stopped the Padres from doing what they've done to the Giants all series. San Diego took 3 of the first 4 meetings this weekend, and Sunday's finale followed the same script even after Roupp got through the opening two innings unscathed.

San Diego jumped Roupp for 4 runs in the second inning and never trailed. San Francisco chipped away with single runs in the 4th, 5th and 8th to make it interesting late, but a Padres run in the 4th proved to be the difference in a 5-4 final. Seven Giants hits and 2 errors weren't enough to erase a four-run hole dug in a single frame.

The bigger picture explains why this result stings differently for each side. San Diego is scrapping for a wild-card spot and needed exactly this kind of series — winning 4 of 5 recently — to stay in the mix. San Francisco, at 47-64, is buried in the NL West and has reportedly been fielding trade calls on its better players ahead of the deadline, so results like this one are more about evaluating who's worth keeping than chasing October.

Manager Tony Vitello spent part of the week publicly defending Willy Adames after criticism of his defense went viral on the broadcast, which tells you where the temperature is in that clubhouse right now. San Diego, by contrast, gets to bank a series win and move on with its bullpen intact for the stretch run — the kind of small, unglamorous edge that adds up over 162.
