Foster Griffin took the ball for Cleveland at 6:40 PM ET off one of the best stretches of his season, while Carson Whisenhunt was tasked with keeping a thin Giants lineup within shouting distance early. It was never much of a fight.

The pick landed clean. Griffin was exactly the steadying presence the case argued for, and the Giants' lineup without Adames never threatened to punish a mistake, going down 8-1. The bear about Cleveland's shaky recent offense never mattered — they scored 5 runs before the third inning was over.

Pregame

Cleveland's the healthier team on paper even with its own bumps and bruises — Griffin's been sharp in his early Cleveland look while Webb's absence leaves San Francisco's rotation genuinely thin. The Giants have shown they can still score in bunches, but doing it consistently without their best arm and with Adames compromised is a lot to ask on the road.

San Francisco arrived without Willy Adames, whose lower back has been barking for weeks and kept him out of the lineup again Tuesday, and Cleveland was missing its own regular in Chase DeLauter (hamstring). Neither absence was a secret walking in, and the market had Cleveland as a heavy favorite before first pitch reflecting exactly that gap.

It played out that way from the jump. Cleveland strung together 3 runs in the first and 2 more in the second, and by the time Whisenhunt left the mound the game had stopped being competitive.

Griffin needed just 6 innings to rack up 6 strikeouts and keep the Giants off the board apart from a lone second-inning run, extending his run as one of the best in-season pickups Cleveland made at the deadline after arriving from Washington.
