Arizona came into this series reeling after getting swept by Tampa Bay — losing by scores of 1-6, 2-4, and 1-5 over 3 games in Florida. The Giants walking into Chase Field has fixed all of that. A 5-4 win Monday and an 8-2 blowout Tuesday gave the D-backs their footing back, and the offense has done damage both nights against a rotation that gives up opportunities. McDonald's command has been inconsistent enough that if Arizona's lineup gets him in a groove early, this game can get out of hand quickly.

San Francisco's season has been a prolonged disappointment. The front office built an expensive infield around Devers, Adames, and Chapman expecting to contend, and the result is 35 wins in 85 games. The bullpen has been gutted by injuries all year — 5 relievers currently on the IL — and road games against teams playing anything close to functional baseball have been brutal. Arizona at 43-42 is not a world-beater, but they are healthy enough, at home, and playing a team that cannot get out of its own way. Gallen is an active liability on the mound, but the Giants are handing him a lineup that's short its best pieces.
