Wednesday's finale at Chase Field features Zac Gallen (3-7, 6.15 ERA) against Trevor McDonald (2-6, 4.94 ERA) at 6:40 PM MT. Neither guy comes in throwing darts. Gallen's issues run deeper than a rough stretch: his pitch tunneling has broken down, opposing hitters have learned to lay off his breaking ball, and his whiff rate is at the lowest clip of his career. McDonald is a 25-year-old righty still finding consistency at this level — his last outing was 5.1 innings, 7 hits, 3 earned runs, and 90 pitches against Atlanta to get the loss.

Arizona opened as modest favorites and the price reflects a real game, but San Francisco shows up with Chapman hurt and Adames questionable, behind a starter who hasn't strung together consistent outings all year. The D-backs have beaten this Giants rotation twice already this series and have momentum at home. Back Arizona to get the win.

The Giants' injury situation makes an already uphill climb steeper. Matt Chapman left Tuesday's 8-2 loss in the sixth inning after making a barehand play and walking off in obvious pain — he had charged in on a grounder, threw out Gabriel Moreno at first, and immediately showed he was hurting. He's got an abdominal strain that had apparently been nagging for weeks and is scheduled for an MRI Wednesday. Willy Adames was already out of Tuesday's lineup with a back issue. San Francisco heads into a series finale with two of its key infield pieces compromised.

Arizona came into this series reeling after getting swept by Tampa Bay — losing by scores of 1-6, 2-4, and 1-5 over 3 games in Florida. The Giants walking into Chase Field has fixed all of that. A 5-4 win Monday and an 8-2 blowout Tuesday gave the D-backs their footing back, and the offense has done damage both nights against a rotation that gives up opportunities. McDonald's command has been inconsistent enough that if Arizona's lineup gets him in a groove early, this game can get out of hand quickly.

San Francisco's season has been a prolonged disappointment. The front office built an expensive infield around Devers, Adames, and Chapman expecting to contend, and the result is 35 wins in 85 games. The bullpen has been gutted by injuries all year — 5 relievers currently on the IL — and road games against teams playing anything close to functional baseball have been brutal. Arizona at 43-42 is not a world-beater, but they are healthy enough, at home, and playing a team that cannot get out of its own way. Gallen is an active liability on the mound, but the Giants are handing him a lineup that's short its best pieces.
