San Francisco at Arizona, Monday night in Phoenix. On paper this is a tossup — Pinnacle has the Diamondbacks at -133 and the total set at 9 — but the pitching matchup is doing most of the talking. Robbie Ray and his 3.04 ERA against Zac Gallen and his 5.02. That's not a typo.

Ray has been the Giants' best starter this year and it's not particularly close. His last time out he ripped off 7 strikeouts over 6 innings in a win over Pittsburgh, his fourth quality start of the season. Through 8 starts he's sitting on a 1.09 WHIP and a 47:18 K:BB. The Cy Young version isn't all the way back, but the guy who shows up every fifth day and gives San Francisco a chance? Yeah, he's here.

Gallen is the opposite story and Arizona fans are not having a good time with it. He returned on a 1-year, $16.9M prove-it deal and the underlying numbers are uglier than the ERA — bottom-10% in hard-hit rate, an 18.5% whiff rate on his arsenal, a four-seamer that hitters are barely missing. The Athletic floated him as a possible trade candidate. In May. For a team that's supposed to contend.

Neither team is exactly stable on the position-player side either. The Giants just lost Heliot Ramos for at least 2 weeks with a quad strain, which thins out an already mediocre lineup, and Logan Webb is still working his way back from the knee IL. Arizona's first-base situation is a mess with Pavin Smith and Carlos Santana both shelved, and Corbin Burnes is nowhere near a rehab assignment yet.

If you're betting this one, the obvious read is that Ray is the steadier hand and the Giants moneyline at +121 is the value play. The counter is that Chase Field has been a launching pad and Arizona's lineup still has enough thump to make any lefty sweat. Total of 9 feels fair — under if you trust Ray, over if you've watched Gallen pitch in 2026. Take your pick.

First pitch is 8:40 PM ET. Giants need this one badly to keep the season from completely sliding; the Diamondbacks need it to stop the bleeding around their rotation. Should be a fun watch even if the matchup on paper isn't sexy.
