Yoshinobu Yamamoto (9-6, 2.85 ERA) got the ball for LA in the series finale against Cam Schlittler (9-5, 2.13 ERA), who's quietly become the steadiest arm in the Yankees rotation. First pitch went off at 12:35 PM ET with the Dodgers already up 2-1 in the season series and looking to close it out.

Dodgers won outright 8-2, cashing the moneyline as the lineup depth edge overwhelmed New York's short-handed order.

Pregame

We took the Dodgers at -124 and it wasn't close to a stretch — this is still the deeper, more talented roster even without a full bullpen. New York's offense is neutered without Judge and Stanton in the middle of the order, and that gap shows up against a good opponent more than it does against a bad one. Schlittler gives the Yankees a puncher's chance every time out, but a puncher's chance wasn't enough here.

New York took the mound thin. Carlos Rodon, Max Fried and Clarke Schmidt are all working back from elbow issues, which is exactly why Schlittler passed on his first All-Star Game invite — he didn't want to stretch the rotation any further than it already was. Aaron Judge hasn't played since May 31 with a rib fracture that's still not fully healed, and Giancarlo Stanton remains out with a calf injury, so the middle of that lineup was never going to scare anybody.

The Dodgers, for their part, weren't exactly whole either — their bullpen is running without Edwin Diaz, Blake Treinen, Ben Casparius and Jake Cousins, and the rotation is still waiting on Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell. LA came in as the favorite on the moneyline, but the number reflected a talent gap more than a health gap.

LA had dropped 3 straight to Arizona right before this series, so this wasn't a team riding a hot streak into the Bronx — it was a team that had just been embarrassed and needed a response. They got one in this series, taking the first game 2-1 before backing it up here.

The game was tight into the middle innings before it wasn't. A 2-run third and a run in the fifth had the Dodgers up modestly, and Yankees stayed within a run most of the way. Then the 8th inning broke it open — a 5-run frame that buried New York and turned a competitive afternoon into an 8-2 laugher. Yamamoto worked around some traffic for the win, while Schlittler's final line didn't match the shutdown stuff he'd shown against Tampa Bay earlier in the month.

For the Yankees, the bigger story than any single game is the calendar — every week Judge, Rodon and Fried stay out is a week closer to a lost stretch of the season. The Dodgers, meanwhile, keep finding a way to win series even while patching together a pitching staff, and that depth showed up again on getaway day.
