This one had a built-in subplot before a pitch was thrown. Roki Sasaki (3-5, 5.21 ERA) made his first Bronx start since Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, and he drew Gerrit Cole (3-4, 3.74 ERA) — the same pitcher who watched a 5-0 lead evaporate in that series. First pitch went at 7:05 PM ET, and this time neither ace let things get out of hand early.

Hit — the Dodgers won outright 2-1, with Ohtani's return and Sasaki's bounce-back outweighing the sloppy prior week.

Pregame

The Dodgers came in as the sharper side despite the ugly week, and the price reflected a near coin-flip against a Yankees team missing Judge and Stanton. Backing the best record in baseball on the road, even mid-slump, made sense with Ohtani back in the leadoff spot. Sharp money leaned Dodgers pregame, and the top staked side matched that read.

The Yankees needed length from Cole more than usual. New York is without Carlos Rodon, Max Fried and Clarke Schmidt, all on the injured list, which has forced the rotation to lean hard on its healthy arms — and Cole obliged, working deep after a rough final start before the break where Tampa Bay tagged him for 7 hits. On the other side, Shohei Ohtani was back in the leadoff spot after sitting out the All-Star Game, giving the Dodgers lineup a jolt they badly needed.

Neither offense had much rhythm through the middle innings, which tracked with how both teams have actually been playing lately. The Yankees enter having won 4 straight, a sharp turn after a 2-11 stretch that preceded it, while the Dodgers were still trying to shake off a three-game sweep in Arizona that saw them get outscored 23-8 and commit 9 errors in 5 games. Two teams trending in opposite directions met in the middle for a tight one.

The Yankees actually struck first, plating a run in the third to grab an early edge, and it held up as Sasaki and the Dodgers bullpen kept New York off the board the rest of the way. Los Angeles finally broke through in the seventh, scoring twice to flip the game — the only multi-run frame either team would manage all night. From there it was about hanging on, and the Dodgers did, closing it out despite an error on their side of the ledger.

It's the kind of low-scoring, low-margin win the Dodgers needed after a week that had Dave Roberts publicly frustrated with his team's sloppiness. Both rosters are dealing with real absences up and down the roster — Los Angeles is still without Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Edwin Diaz and catcher Will Smith, while New York is missing Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton — and neither club is at full strength right now.

For the Dodgers, the takeaway is simple: even in a stretch where nothing's clicked, the top of the roster — Ohtani, a bounce-back Sasaki — can still steal a game in a tough building. For the Yankees, it's a step back after 4 straight wins, but a competitive loss to the sport's best team with half their lineup on the shelf isn't a disaster. Both teams head into the weekend with plenty to sort out.
