Snell (1-1, 3.60 ERA) made his second start since returning from a 3-month elbow layoff, and he'd shown plenty in the first one — 10 strikeouts over 6 innings against Kansas City on August 11. Tomoyuki Sugano (12-6, 4.70 ERA) took the ball for Colorado off a strong turn of his own, 6 innings and just 2 earned runs against Arizona his last time out.

The bull case delivered exactly as advertised — LA's lineup did the heavy lifting and Snell didn't need to be perfect behind an 11-run outburst. The bullpen concern from the bear case never got tested since the Dodgers led comfortably from the third inning on.

Pregame

The Dodgers are the deeper, more talented team by a wide margin, and Snell looked every bit the ace he used to be in his return outing. Colorado's rebuild shows up most in run prevention, and that's the exact swing skill a lineup like Los Angeles' is built to exploit.

The Dodgers' pitching staff has taken a beating this year — Blake Treinen, Brusdar Graterol, Ben Casparius, Jake Cousins and Will Klein are all out for extended stretches, and Justin Wrobleski just joined them with forearm inflammation. Colorado, meanwhile, was already down its everyday backstop, with Hunter Goodman sidelined by left shoulder inflammation that's kept him out of the lineup for days.

None of that mattered much once the bats got going at altitude. LA had already taken the series opener before this one, and Tuesday was more of the same — a lineup that doesn't have many soft spots doing damage against a Rockies pitching staff that's had to piece things together all year.

Colorado had actually won 3 of its last 5 coming in, including a 13-7 slugfest over the Giants, so this wasn't a team playing dead. But a 50-75 club going up against a 75-51 juggernaut at less than full strength was always going to be a tough ask, and the Dodgers made sure it stayed that way from the third inning on.

The Dodgers broke it open with a 4-run third and never let Colorado sniff a lead, tacking on runs in five different innings while Sugano and the Rockies bullpen couldn't find any answers. It was the kind of Coors Field game that looks close on paper and wasn't at all.

LA banked 14 hits to Colorado's 6 and won the last 3 innings alone 4-3, closing it out with an 11-5 final that padded a season that's already trending toward October. For the Rockies, it's another notch in a lost year that's now waiting on Goodman's shoulder and hoping Sugano's breakout keeps the rotation respectable down the stretch.
