Eric Lauer got the ball for the rubber match with the Dodgers' actual top-of-the-rotation options scattered across rehab assignments, and Aaron Nola came in trying to shake off a season that's gone sideways at 3-7 with a 5.83 ERA. Neither guy was walking into this one with much margin for error, and the Dodgers' lineup made sure there wasn't any.

Dodgers won outright 9-5, cashing the moneyline exactly as the bull case (best record, Nola struggling) played out.

Pregame

We backed the Dodgers at their entry price and it held up — even without their top two rotation arms, LA is still the sport's best record for a reason, and Nola's 5.83 ERA made this a lean-worthy spot from the jump. The gap in true talent between these two rosters is bigger than a M65-38-vs-56-46 record even suggests.

The stakes here go beyond one series. LA's rotation has been gutted for months — Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow both on the 60-day IL, Bobby Miller and Gavin Stone shut down since spring, Edwin Diaz's bullpen return still probably a week out per manager Dave Roberts. That's what pushed a depth arm like Lauer into a series-deciding start on the road, and it's the same attrition that's made every one of these games with Philadelphia a fistfight instead of a laugher.

Philadelphia had chances to make it a non-issue. They'd already shown they could hang 10 runs on this Dodgers team just two days earlier, and Bryce Harper's lineup doesn't need much to turn a rubber match. But the Phillies have been streaky all month — losers in three of their last five walking in — and they got squeezed by their own bullpen down the stretch instead of LA's.

The Dodgers turned it into a laugher late. After trading small leads and lead changes through seven, LA broke it open with a four-run eighth that turned a tight game into a comfortable win, and the bullpen slammed the door from there. It was the kind of finish that validates the -1.5 number this team's record has been asking for even while the pitching staff patches itself together on the fly.

This one also closes out a series that swung on the margins — a Justin Crawford rundown gone wrong for Philly the night before, a four-run frame for LA the night after. Take the whole three games together and it's a fair encapsulation of where these two teams sit: the Dodgers with the sport's best record and a beat-up staff that keeps finding ways to win anyway, the Phillies dangerous enough to blow a game open but too inconsistent lately to close one out.
