Roki Sasaki (5-5, 4.64 ERA) gets the ball for Los Angeles looking to be the guy who finally stops the bleeding, while Merrill Kelly (8-9, 5.04 ERA) takes the mound for Arizona trying to build off a good week at Chase Field.

The Dodgers are priced heavy favorites even mid-slump, and that price still reflects the talent gap more than the recent form. Sasaki's stuff has trended up sharply this year, and a five-game skid from a 69-win team reads more like a correction than a collapse. Backing LA here is betting the roster over the vibes.

Freddie Freeman is trending toward available after getting hit on the hand against the Cubs, which matters plenty for a Dodgers lineup that's gone cold at the worst time. Arizona, for its part, held onto Kelly and its rotation pieces at the deadline even with Corbin Burnes and Zac Gallen both out for the long haul, and the number crunchers still have LA as the favorite on the board tonight.

None of that changes the fact that the Diamondbacks have been finding ways to win series at home lately, and a desperate Dodgers team walking into 107-degree heat isn't the most comfortable spot for a club that's forgotten how to hit.

Five straight losses is five straight losses no matter the record sitting above it, and Dave Roberts has openly questioned his lineup's fight after getting run out of Wrigley. The bullpen hasn't helped either, and until somebody starts stringing together quality at-bats, Sasaki's stuff can only carry this team so far.

Arizona's not exactly whole either, but it split its last four with San Diego and got a jolt from newly acquired Lars Nootbaar, who delivered his first hit and RBI as a Diamondback during a 10-4 win. If Kelly can give Arizona length after a rough five-inning, five-run outing his last time out, this is a winnable series opener for a team that still believes it's playing meaningful August baseball.
