Brandon Pfaadt (7-1, 3.13 ERA) got the ball for Arizona at 4:10 PM ET, going up against Boston's Payton Tolle (8-6, 3.08 ERA) in the finale of this set. Both arms have been sharp lately — Pfaadt's last turn was 7 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts against Atlanta, and Tolle just threw 8 scoreless innings against Toronto — but neither one factored into the decision. This one went to the bullpens, then to extras.

Boston lost this one outright, 6-7, so the moneyline pick misses. Tolle's form held up fine — this stayed a low-scoring game through 9 innings — but the bullpen couldn't protect a 5-5 tie into the 10th. Arizona's 3-game skid coming in didn't carry over; the Diamondbacks found the 2 extra runs Boston couldn't answer.

Pregame

Boston's riding a healthier lineup and a pitching matchup that favors them, while Arizona is down its third baseman and its second baseman in the same week. The Diamondbacks' price still reflects a competitive team, but the roster in front of you tonight isn't the one that record was built with.

Boston's rolling without half its expected lineup and rotation at this point — Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Triston Casas, Roman Anthony and Masataka Yoshida are all out for extended stretches, and Jahmai Jones was a late scratch Wednesday with hip tightness. Arizona's not exactly full-strength either, playing without Ketel Marte and getting zero clarity on whether he's back this season. The board still liked Boston at home, and the bulk of the notable pregame action was stacked on the Under.

First pitch went off under sunny skies and 86-degree heat at Fenway. Arizona grabbed an early edge with a 3-run 5th, but Boston answered right back with 3 of its own in the 6th to even it up, and that's where it stayed.

Both bullpens held after that — the score sat tied at 5 through the 9th, sending it to extras. Arizona broke through first in the 10th, plating 2, and Boston's answer stalled at 1. Final: Diamondbacks 7, Red Sox 6, with Arizona out-hitting the home team 10 to 9.

Boston still banks the series thanks to the first 2 games, but this finale is a different flavor of loss than the 2 lopsided ones that preceded it. Arizona, which had dropped 3 straight coming in, needed every bit of that extra frame to leave Fenway with a win instead of a sweep hanging over the flight home.

Neither club is walking away spotless — Boston's inching back toward health at a couple of spots (Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Trevor Story) while still missing key middle-of-the-order pieces, and Arizona's rotation remains a MASH unit with Zac Gallen and Corbin Burnes both still on throwing programs, not innings. Extra-inning wins like this one are nice mile markers, but they don't fix a depth chart.
