Rookie Mitch Bratt got the ball on short notice Sunday, called up from Triple-A Reno for the second time in three weeks after Zac Gallen's elbow forced Arizona to scramble. Bratt, part of the return package for Merrill Kelly last summer, had posted a 2.84 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League before his June 24 debut. Emmet Sheehan drew the unenviable task of stopping the bleeding for a Dodgers team that had already dropped the first two games of this series.

This one missed — Arizona's bullpen and offense finished off the sweep, with the Dodgers' error-riddled defense doing them no favors.

Pregame

The Dodgers were locked in as the moneyline pick at -307, and on paper that price made sense — the deepest roster in the league, a huge division cushion, at home. Arizona's rookie starter and reshuffled rotation were supposed to be the equalizer that kept it from being a total mismatch, not the reason for an outright road upset.

Gallen landing on the 15-day IL is the bigger story for Arizona long-term — he's been the staff's rock all year, and now a rookie and a M*A*S*H unit of arms (Corbin Burnes still building back up, Michael Soroka on a throwing program, Ryne Nelson and A.J. Puk both out for the year) are holding the rotation together. Tommy Troy, fresh off going deep in the series, sat out Sunday's finale with a shoulder issue, which stings for a lineup that's finally clicking.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, are dealing with a different flavor of dysfunction. Two errors compounded a lineup that's gone cold, and this sweep marks their second in as many series — a rough way to stagger into the All-Star break for a team that still has the NL West comfortably in hand. Edwin Diaz working his way back in the minors and Blake Snell nearing a rehab assignment are reasons for optimism after the break, but neither helps them this weekend.

Arizona's turnaround here is stark — they'd dropped two straight to San Diego before ripping off three straight wins, the last two coming against the team with MLB's best record. That's the kind of statement stretch a club fighting for a Wild Card spot needs, and doing it on the road against the Dodgers matters more than a series against the Padres would have.

For the Dodgers, this is a first-half gut-check. They're still the favorites in the division and in October, but a rookie no one had heard of a month ago outdueling their pitching staff for a series sweep is the kind of result that lingers. For Arizona, it's proof the roster can still scrap even with the rotation falling apart around them heading into the break.
