Eduardo Rodriguez took the ball for Arizona carrying an 11-4 record and a 2.71 ERA, fresh off a 9-strikeout, 2-run outing against the Dodgers. Grant Holmes started for Atlanta off a scoreless 6 innings against the Yankees his last time out, an ERA of 3.82 that undersold how well he'd been throwing.

The Braves lost 10-3, so the moneyline pick missed badly. Holmes' recent form didn't translate, and the bullpen concern in the bear case turned out to be exactly the problem — Atlanta went six innings without a run while Arizona's offense piled on.

Pregame

Atlanta's still the better team on paper and the price reflects it, but this isn't a layup after Arizona just beat them behind a shutout. Holmes has been dominant in August specifically, which is the more relevant data point than his season-long ERA, and that's enough to trust the Braves to bounce back at home.

Arizona was without Ketel Marte, out of the lineup with a day-to-day knee issue, and the Diamondbacks' rotation is already stretched thin with Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen and Ryne Nelson all on the 60-day injured list. Atlanta had its own holes to manage, with Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach both out long-term and the bullpen missing Reynaldo Lopez and Robert Suarez. Books still made the Braves home favorites, which made this one worth a look regardless of who was missing.

None of the pregame math held up once first pitch hit. Atlanta grabbed an early lead and then went quiet for six straight innings while Arizona's lineup kept finding holes.

The Braves scored twice in the first and looked like the team the price said they were. Then Arizona answered with 3 runs in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd, and Atlanta's offense simply stopped showing up — six shutout innings sandwiched around a single run in the 9th. Arizona tacked on 3 more of its own in the 9th to turn a comfortable lead into a laugher, finishing with 13 hits to Atlanta's 6.

This was the second leg of the set, and Arizona had already taken game 1 by a 2-0 score. Two wins in, the Diamondbacks have full control of the series after arriving off a mixed stretch against Colorado. Atlanta, which had taken 2 of 3 from the Mets its last time through a series, now has to find its offense again in a hurry.

Rodriguez didn't need his best command to shut this lineup down for a second straight game — Arizona's bats made sure of that well before he had to. For Atlanta, the ugly middle innings and a bullpen already down two key arms are the bigger concern than one bad start from Holmes.
