Matthew Boyd (7-1, 3.59 ERA) gets the ball for Chicago looking to salvage the rubber match after Kansas City took Saturday's nightcap. Randy Dobnak, a waiver-wire pickup who was driving for Uber not that long ago, counters for the Royals with a 1.16 ERA that nobody saw coming.

We took the Cubs on the moneyline and we're staying there. Boyd's been the better pitcher over a longer sample, Chicago's lineup is deeper top to bottom, and a club fighting for a division title in August should not be losing a series to a last-place team. Dobnak's magic has been real, but betting against a contender's best version of itself is a tough ask.

Dobnak's story is the best thing going for this Royals team right now. He was traded from Minnesota in June for essentially nothing, got recalled from Triple-A Omaha, and has been lights-out through his first four big-league starts back — a 1.16 ERA nobody in Kansas City's front office projected. The industry-wide read is that the ERA is running well ahead of his peripherals, and regression is coming eventually. Sunday just isn't guaranteed to be the day.

The gap between these two rosters is real. The Cubs added Clay Holmes and Ryan Zeferjahn at the deadline to fortify a bullpen that's been gutted by injury, and they're still hunting a division-leading Milwaukee club they trail by 5.5 games with less than two months to play. The Royals, meanwhile, are on pace for something close to 100 losses and are just trying to find out which of their young arms and reclamation projects are worth building around in 2027.

Chicago's lineup has been the story of the last two weeks — a sweep of the Dodgers sandwiched a win over Toronto before the Cubs dropped Saturday's first game to Kansas City and rebounded, well, in the loss column at least, they're still 4-1 across their last five. Pete Crow-Armstrong has been doing serious damage in that stretch. The Royals counter with their own recent jolt: Saturday's win snapped a two-game slide and pushed them to 3-2 over their last five, with Dobnak's turn in the rotation the biggest reason for the flicker of momentum.

Both injury boards are ugly, but in different ways. Chicago's list is almost entirely pitching — a parade of relievers on the 15- and 60-day IL that's forced Craig Counsell to lean on newcomers just to fill innings. Kansas City is bleeding position players too, with Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia both sidelined, which thins out a lineup that already isn't scaring anybody. Neither team is at full strength walking into this series finale at Kauffman.

Kauffman Stadium is forecast for a sunny, 90-degree afternoon at 1:10 PM CT, the kind of heat that tends to help the ball carry. With a rebuilding team's fifth starter matched against a contender's rotation piece trying to keep pace in a real playoff race, the stakes here are lopsided — but Dobnak's given Kansas City just enough reason to think this one won't be easy.
