Backing Chicago here is a bet against the unknown more than a bet against Seattle. The Cubs are the far better team on paper and by record, and the guy trying to beat them has zero big-league innings on his resume. That's a gap the price hasn't fully closed.

Cubs
  • Sit atop the NL Wild Card standings
  • Took 2 of 3 from the White Sox recently
  • Peterson brought in for rotation stability
  • Lost 2 straight coming into this one
  • Bullpen down 5 relievers to injury
  • Peterson's ERA sits at 5.29 with Chicago
Mariners
  • Won their last game, 3-2 in last 5
  • Top prospect Anderson dominated at Double-A
  • Just beat Chicago in the series opener
  • Sit well under .500 at 61-68
  • Suffered a franchise-worst 22-0 loss recently
  • Bullpen missing Brash, Criswell and Wilcox

David Peterson takes the ball for Chicago at 4:15 PM PT carrying a 7-7 record and a 5.29 ERA that's still a work in progress since he landed with the Cubs. Across from him, Seattle hands the rock to a pitcher who has never thrown a Major League inning.

Kade Anderson was the 3rd overall pick in last year's draft out of LSU, and he tore through Double-A Arkansas to the tune of a 10-1 record and a 1.06 ERA before Seattle called his number. Peterson, for his part, was a deadline pickup from the Mets brought in to stabilize a Cubs staff that's been bleeding relievers all summer — he was 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA in New York before the trade.

That gap in pedigree is a big reason the odds board looks upside down: Seattle, at 61-68, is priced as the moneyline favorite over a Cubs club that's 13 games better in the standings. A completely unproven arm getting more respect than a veteran with a track record is exactly the kind of thing a betting market has to guess at, not know.

Chicago has dropped two straight coming into this one, including the series opener here, a 5-6 loss. Seattle, meanwhile, is coming off a win in that same game and has quietly gone 3-2 in its last five — a modest bounce-back after getting run out of the building 22-0 by the Brewers, the worst loss in franchise history.

Both pens are stretched thin. Chicago is without Phil Maton, Ben Brown, Riley Martin and Hunter Harvey for the year or close to it, plus Gavin Hollowell still working back from shoulder trouble. Seattle's not much better off, missing Matt Brash, Cooper Criswell and Cole Wilcox, and it already ruled Bryan Woo out of this entire weekend set. Whoever needs length out of the pen first is going to be searching for outs.
