Matthew Boyd (8-2, 4.02 ERA) gets the ball for Chicago, with Emerson Hancock (7-7, 3.30) countering for Seattle when first pitch goes at 7:10 PM PT. Boyd was one of the best stories in the Cubs rotation for most of the summer, but his last time out against the Cardinals turned into a disaster. Hancock, meanwhile, just turned in one of his best starts of the season against Houston.

Seattle's price is basically a coin flip despite the gap in records, which tells you the market already knows Boyd got rocked for four homers his last time out and that the Cubs pen is running thin behind him. Hancock, fresh off one of his best starts of the year, gives Seattle a real chance at home. We'll take the value and back the Mariners outright.

Chicago's rotation trouble is compounded by a bullpen that's bled arms all summer — Phil Maton, Ben Brown, Daniel Palencia, Hunter Harvey and Riley Martin are all on extended injured-list stints, and shortstop Dansby Swanson is out with an oblique on top of it. Seattle isn't exactly whole either — Bryan Woo is managing a shoulder issue and J.P. Crawford is still working back from his wrist — but the Mariners at least got Hancock's gem to close out their last homestand. The market's treating this one a lot closer than the records alone would suggest.

That's really the story of this series opener: a genuinely good Cubs team walking a tightrope with a taxed pitching staff, against a middling Mariners club trying to squeeze one more push out of a lineup and rotation that don't have much margin left for error.

Seattle's form card is rockier than the record suggests. After taking both meetings with Houston, the Mariners were run off the field by Milwaukee in an ugly loss before bouncing back to win the next one and dropping the finale — good for 1 of the first 3 against the Brewers so far. Chicago's stretch reads calmer on the surface: they dropped both of their looks at St. Louis in that window, the Boyd blowup among them, before rattling off 2 of 3 against the crosstown White Sox to get right again.

The injury sheets read almost like organizational depth charts at this point. Chicago's already without Justin Steele, Cade Horton and Porter Hodge for extended stretches, and Kevin Gausman is day-to-day after leaving his last start with a hand cramp — thin margins for a staff that just watched its most reliable arm have a nightmare outing. Seattle's not much healthier: Luke Raley's done for the year, Colt Emerson and J.P. Crawford are both trying to work back, and even Woo is on the day-to-day list. Neither dugout is at full strength walking into this one.

Whatever's still realistically in play for Seattle this year, T-Mobile Park has at least given them one recent statement — see Hancock's near-masterpiece against Houston. For Chicago, the assignment is simpler: stop the bleeding, get length out of Boyd, and remind everyone why they're 20 games over .500. Whoever solves that first probably takes the opener.
