Colin Rea got the ball for Chicago looking to build off a shaky last start, while Michael McGreevy tried to right the ship for a Cardinals team that's been sinking fast. Neither pitcher was sharp entering the night, and it showed early — this one turned into a laugher before St. Louis fans had finished parking.

Cubs cruised 10-2, cashing the moneyline exactly as the lineup-depth bull case predicted.

Pregame

We took the Cubs at -110 and it wasn't close — Chicago's lineup with Tucker back in it is a different animal, and the Cardinals' bullpen has been bleeding runs for weeks. This was a mismatch dressed up as a coin-flip price.

Kyle Tucker being back in the middle of Chicago's order changes the math on this whole lineup, and St. Louis felt it two nights running. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are still without Ramon Urias and JoJo Romero, and their bullpen has been running on fumes for weeks now — not exactly the recipe for slowing down a Cubs team that's clicking.

This series was billed as a measuring stick for a Cardinals club trying to prove it still belongs in the playoff picture. Instead it's turned into batting practice for Chicago, and the gap between these two teams looked a lot wider than the standings suggest.

Chicago put this one away early and never let St. Louis sniff a comeback, piling up 17 hits against a Cardinals pitching staff that had no answers. It's the kind of game that buries a losing streak — the Cubs have now won 4 of their last 5, and they've beaten the Cardinals in back-to-back blowouts to close this series out.

St. Louis has lost 4 of its last 5 and this was the low point, a total no-show at home in front of a crowd hoping for a signature statement win. Between the injury list and a bullpen that keeps coughing up leads, the Cardinals look like a team running out of answers with the calendar working against them.
