Ben Brown is the interesting wrinkle. He's only been a starter again for a hot minute — Craig Counsell pushed him back into the rotation after Matthew Boyd's knee surgery, and Brown has rewarded the move with a 1.82 ERA and a stretch where he's allowed one hit over his last 8.2 innings. He's not fully stretched out like a traditional starter yet, so how deep Counsell lets him go in a tight game is its own subplot.
On the other side sits the problem. Chris Sale is 6-2 with a 2.20 ERA and has gone at least 7 innings in 3 of his last 4 starts, including 7 frames of 2-run ball against the Dodgers last week with his fastball touching 96 mph. He's been a horse and he's doing it in a park that suits him.
The injury column is doing a lot of the talking in this one. Atlanta is rolling without Ronald Acuna Jr., who Walt Weiss confirmed won't be back during this homestand, and without Sean Murphy, who's looking at an 8-week absence with a fractured finger. Drake Baldwin has stepped in behind the plate and the Braves haven't blinked. Chicago, meanwhile, is running a rotation missing Justin Steele, Boyd, Cade Horton, and Shelby Miller, which is exactly why Brown is starting at all.

The path for the Cubs is narrow. Brown has to keep doing what he's been doing, the bullpen has to cover the back half without leaking, and an offense hitting .202 over the last 10 has to scratch a couple across against Sale. That's a lot of has-tos against the team with the best record in baseball.
