Hunter Dobbins (2-1, 3.74 ERA) gets the ball for St. Louis against Ryan Weathers (4-7, 3.99) for New York on Tuesday, August 4 at 7:05 PM ET, and both guys were dealing the last time out. Dobbins didn't allow a run in 6.0 innings against the Angels, and Weathers went 7.0 scoreless against the White Sox without even picking up a decision. If either version shows up again, this could look nothing like the slugfest these two clubs just put on.

The Yankees are the play here even with the injury list piling up, because the talent gap and home-field edge still outweigh a rough bullpen night. Weathers has quietly been one of their more reliable arms, and St. Louis is still a sub-.500 club on the road. The price reflects real risk given how thin New York's lineup is, but the pick stands.

That's the hope for the Yankees anyway, because their bullpen is the reason last night got out of hand in the first place. New York is also working with a beat-up roster right now — Aaron Judge is still on the 60-day IL with the rib injury, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger are both out, and both Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt are rehabbing arm issues rather than pitching. Weathers has been one of the few steady things about this rotation lately, and the Yankees need him to eat innings again.

St. Louis, meanwhile, is trying to build on some real momentum. Alec Burleson hit three homers in the comeback win, and the Cardinals have now won back-to-back games after dropping three straight before that. They're still under .500 at 56-57, but a road series win over a Yankees team missing this much thump would be a nice notch for a club that's been streaky all year.

The injury list is lopsided here — St. Louis is dealing with a couple of long-term IL situations in Ramon Urias and reliever Max Rajcic, but nothing close to the collection of names New York is missing. That gap matters more in a series than in any single game, but it's part of why the Yankees, even at home and favored, feel a little less airtight than their record suggests.

Both teams enter having split their last five, but the way they got there says something: the Yankees have been grinding out low-scoring games, while the Cardinals just showed they can put up a crooked number in a hurry when the bats get going. If Weathers and Dobbins both pitch like their last outings, expect a tighter, quieter night than the one these two just gave everybody.
