Michael McGreevy (4-9, 3.59 ERA) got the ball for St. Louis in the series opener at Yankee Stadium, going up against Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2.26 ERA), who came in as one of the more reliable arms in the Yankees rotation.

The Yankees lost outright 13-7, and the bear case nailed it: a lineup without Judge, Bellinger and Stanton simply couldn't hold a 7-6 lead once the bullpen cracked. Schlittler's form didn't matter much once St. Louis strung together a 7-run eighth against relievers, and the talent-gap case on paper didn't survive a bullpen implosion in the biggest inning of the night.

Pregame

The Yankees are heavily favored here, and that price reflects a real gap: Schlittler's been one of the better arms in baseball while McGreevy is coming off the worst start of his career. St. Louis has shown they can still win games, but backing a sub-.500 team that just became a deadline seller against a home favorite with a legitimate ace is a tough ask.

New York has been scraping together lineups without Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton for weeks now, and Monday was another test of just how deep this roster can dig. St. Louis, meanwhile, showed up with a lineup that had life even after a start from McGreevy that came off a rough outing against the Cubs.

Both offenses found ways to put runs on the board early, setting up a game that had way more scoring than anyone drawing up a pitching matchup card would've guessed.

The Yankees actually had the lead heading into the eighth after chipping away with a 3-run fifth and a 4-run seventh off the Cardinals bullpen. Then St. Louis answered with a 7-run eighth that buried New York for good, turning a tight, back-and-forth game into a 13-7 laugher in a matter of minutes. That's the kind of inning that erases a comeback and then some.

St. Louis came in having dropped 4 of its last 5, part of a stretch that had already pushed the Cardinals below .500 for the first time all season. A night like this, with 13 runs and 13 hits, is exactly the kind of outburst a lineup needs to shake off a slump like that.

Schlittler's line got wrecked by circumstance more than anything he did wrong on the mound, and the Yankees now have to regroup fast with three games left in this series and a beat-up roster that isn't getting healthier by the day.
