On the mound it was Hunter Dobbins against Jesús Luzardo, and Luzardo came in white-hot — 3 earned runs across his last 3 starts with a strikeout in almost every other batter he faced. Dobbins wasn't chopped liver either, sporting a 3.42 ERA of his own, but neither man walked away with a clean final line once this one turned into a slugfest that needed 10 innings to settle.

Phillies got there, but barely — a 7-6 walk-off in extra innings, not the comfortable Luzardo-led win the case argued for. The bear risk showed up plainly, with St. Louis tying it late and forcing a 10th before Philadelphia finally finished it. Still, the moneyline cashes: a win outright is a win outright, however messy the path.

Pregame

Philadelphia's price here is steep, but it's steep for a reason — Luzardo has been the best version of himself all month and the offense hasn't had a cold night in over a week. St. Louis has to lean on a pitcher who's still finding his footing since a midseason call-up, against a lineup that's been unforgiving lately. This is a spot where paying up for the better team makes sense.

The story behind both dugouts explained why extras made sense. St. Louis lost right-hander Andre Pallante to the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation right before this series, thinning a rotation that already had Ramon Urias and Max Rajcic on the shelf. Philadelphia's not exactly whole either — Johan Rojas and Adolis Garcia are both out for the season, and the bullpen is missing Tanner Banks, Brad Keller and Caleb Kilian, which made the sportsbooks' confidence in a clean Phillies win look a little generous in hindsight.

Early on it looked like St. Louis might steal one. The Cardinals jumped out 2-0 in the 1st before Philadelphia clawed back with runs in the 2nd and 3rd, and the two sides traded blows the rest of the way — both teams put up a 2-spot in the 6th, and neither bullpen could find a stretch of outs to put the game away.

St. Louis actually took the lead in the top of the 10th before Philadelphia answered right back in the bottom half to walk it off, 7-6. Both pens got stretched further than either manager wanted, with St. Louis fresh off a 10-9 slugfest of its own against Cincinnati just a day earlier.

The win pushed Philadelphia's streak to 6 straight, extending a stretch that's included finishing off both Minnesota and Miami without much resistance. St. Louis, meanwhile, is still scrapping for a wild card spot in a crowded field that includes the Cubs, Padres and Diamondbacks — the kind of race where a game like this one, lost in extras on the road, stings a little more than the box score lets on.

Both clubs will need their bullpens to recover fast — Philadelphia's especially, given how thin it already was walking into this one. For St. Louis, the margin for error keeps shrinking with every week that passes in the standings.
