This one had no business being competitive after the 3rd inning, when the Cardinals hung 5 runs on the board and looked like they'd cruise. Andre Pallante got the start for St. Louis working off a breakout season (10-6, 3.81 ERA) that's turned him from 2025 afterthought into a rotation anchor, while Eduardo Rodriguez took the ball for Arizona fresh off making the All-Star team, sporting a 2.62 ERA that's been the best number on a Diamondbacks staff otherwise gutted by injuries.

Cashed — Arizona won outright 8-7 despite trailing 5-0, exactly the resilience the pick banked on.

Pregame

Arizona at home with Eduardo Rodriguez's All-Star form was the lean even with St. Louis playing above its head all year. The Diamondbacks needed a full-team push after falling behind by 5, but they found it, and that's the kind of got-it-anyway win worth paying for.

Neither starter finished with much to show for it — Pallante's last time out against Milwaukee was a 6-run, 5-inning disaster, and Rodriguez's turnaround has been built on missing bats and limiting hard contact rather than length, going just 6 innings in his last start against the Dodgers. That matters here: Arizona's rotation is a MASH unit with Zac Gallen, Corbin Burnes, Michael Soroka and Ryne Nelson all shelved, so every bullpen inning behind Rodriguez is a stress test, and the Cardinals' pen is down JoJo Romero and Max Rajcic too. Neither team had much margin for error in the middle innings, and it showed.

The Cardinals grabbed the series opener 5-4 on Friday, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made no attempt to hide his frustration afterward, saying flatly, "That's not D-back baseball." Arizona responded with a tighter 5-3 win Saturday, and Sunday turned into the wildest game of the set — a 5-run 3rd for St. Louis, answered by Arizona chipping away across the 6th, 7th and 8th before finishing it off with a run in the 9th.

St. Louis is in the middle of one of the sport's more unexpected stories, sitting a game out of the final NL Wild Card spot on the strength of Jordan Walker's breakout and rookie JJ Wetherholt holding his own. But blowing a 5-run cushion in a series finale is exactly the kind of game that fuels skeptics who point to St. Louis' run in one-run and extra-inning games as more luck than sustainable strength. Arizona, meanwhile, needed the response after Friday's ugly loss, and getting it from a lineup missing Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jordan Lawlar and Tommy Troy says something about the depth still standing.

For as sloppy as it started for Arizona, walking off — or at least finishing off — the Cardinals after being outscored 5-0 early is the kind of resilience that plays well in a clubhouse that just watched its rotation get picked apart by injuries all month. St. Louis leaves the desert with a series loss but the underlying pieces of its surprise season still intact.
