Dustin May took the ball for Milwaukee looking to snap a 2-game skid against San Diego, drawing Robbie Ray in an early get-away-day matinee at Petco Park that started at 1:10 PM PT.

Backing Milwaukee at -114 leaned on the bullpen and May's recent form, and both showed up — the pen held a tie game deep into extras. But San Diego's own relievers matched them, and Luis Campusano's 11th-inning single flipped it, so the price was right about a tight game and wrong about who'd finish on top.

Pregame

Milwaukee still owns the best record in baseball, and this price treats them like a coin flip against a Padres team that's shorthanded across its rotation. May looked sharp in his Brewers debut, and betting the better overall club at a plus-money-adjacent number after two ugly losses is buying low, not chasing a name.

Milwaukee's infield is banged up with Cooper Pratt on the shelf, and Joey Ortiz has been dealing with his own neck issue, so the left side of the diamond wasn't at full strength walking into this one. San Diego's rotation has its own scars — Nick Pivetta, Lucas Giolito and Joe Musgrove are all out — which is exactly why the Ray trade with the Giants mattered so much at the deadline.

None of that stopped this one from turning into a grind. Both bullpens got dragged into extra work, and by the time the price settled at Petco, it was clear this series finale wasn't going to be decided early.

Gary Sánchez gave the Brewers an early lift with a solo homer, and Xander Bogaerts answered for San Diego before the Padres tied it in the 8th to push the game to extras. Milwaukee grabbed the lead back in the 11th on a Sánchez RBI double, but San Diego tied it right back on a sac fly and Luis Campusano delivered the walk-off single to finish the sweep, 4-3.

That the Brewers even had a shot to win this late says something about their bullpen depth despite the roster holes — it's one of the best pens in baseball by ERA. But three straight losses to a Padres team that just landed a front-line arm at the deadline is a real gut-check, especially with Pratt's absence still working its way through the lineup.

San Diego is now riding a 4-game winning streak with October implications — they're squarely in the NL Wild Card mix. Milwaukee still has the division locked up comfortably at 74-46, but getting swept by a team fighting for its playoff life is the kind of series that lingers.
