Logan Henderson (6-1, 2.70 ERA) takes the ball for Milwaukee at 6:40 PM PT, and he's been about as good as it gets since rejoining the rotation in July. Casey Mize goes for San Diego barely a week into his tenure there, still trying to shake off the worst start of his career in his Padres debut.

Henderson's been a different pitcher since July 1 — a 2.67 ERA and a perfect 5-0 mark over his last five starts — while Mize is still trying to find his footing after a deadline deal that immediately went sideways. The gap in starting pitching quality is close to the whole ballgame here, and the price on Milwaukee still doesn't fully reflect how lopsided this individual matchup looks. Back the Brewers to win outright.

San Diego's rotation picture beyond Mize is bleak — Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta and Lucas Giolito are all working back from injury, which is exactly why the front office went out and traded for arms instead of standing pat at the deadline. Milwaukee has its own attrition to manage, with Joey Ortiz and Cooper Pratt both out of the middle infield, but the Brewers have the depth to paper over that in a way San Diego's pitching staff currently can't.

Because for as good as the Padres have looked lately, they're running it with a patchwork operation. San Diego chose to keep its core together in July rather than sell, betting that its top arms would get healthy in time to hold a playoff spot. That bet gets tested every fifth day Mize takes the mound.

Milwaukee's been grinding rather than blowing teams out to get here — they took 2 of 3 from the Twins and knocked off Pittsburgh twice in a row before boarding the plane west. San Diego's riding a modest heater of its own, having taken 2 of 3 from the Astros to climb back into contention, punctuated by a 7-2 win in the finale. Two teams playing genuinely better baseball than their season-long numbers suggest — but only one of them has a bona fide ace on the mound tonight.

Petco Park at night is still one of the tougher parks in the league to score in, and with Henderson dealing, this has the shape of a game that stays tight into the middle innings — right up until Milwaukee's lineup starts working over a bullpen that's already stretched thin covering for a rotation in triage.
